Oklahoma City Barons News Release

Oklahoma City - The Oklahoma City Barons will wear one-of-a-kind jerseys for their game March 4 to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics. Following the game fans will have the opportunity to literally take the jersey of the players' backs when the jerseys are available for bids in a live auction.

That night, fans can join the Barons in Special Olympics' campaign to "Spread the word to end the word." Members of the Barons will sign a banner and pledge to eliminate the use of the word "retard" and promote acceptance and inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities. In 2010, Special Olympics surpassed 100,000 pledges from around the world. The Barons team will sign a banner supporting this campaign prior to the team's practice Thursday morning at the Cox Convention Center at 9:45 a.m. To learn more about the campaign to end the use of the "R Word", visit www.r-word.org.

The goal of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Faceoff for the game against Abbotsford is 7:05 p.m. at the Cox Convention Center.
