Barons Rally for 3-2 Victory

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Birmingham Barons (33-25) rallied for three runs in the ninth to claim a 3-2 victory over the Jacksonville Suns (32-27) in the fourth game of the series in front of 4,034 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville on Tuesday night.

With the win, the Barons take the series against the Suns, the second time this season Birmingham has beaten Jacksonville in a five-game series.

The game was scoreless until the Suns scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 2-0 lead. The first run scored as Tim Torres reached on a force attempt, as Alden Carrithers made a missed catch error at second for Birmingham to allow Chris Gutierrez to score. Luke Montz added an RBI single to give the Suns a 2-0 lead.

The Barons put the first two men on base in the ninth against Suns reliever Corey Madden. Madden was lifted for Jhan Marinez (1-4), who gave up a run on a fielder's choice unassisted by Paul Gran at with the bases loaded as the Barons cut the score to 2-1. A bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Josh Phegley tied the game as Christian Marrero scored from third and Carrithers advanced from second to third as there were two gone.

The Barons used the squeeze play to score the game-winning run. With Carrithers at third, Greg Paiml laid down a bunt that rolled down the third base line. The ball was fielded by Gran and on a bare-handed play, the third baseman threw on to first to try and retire Paiml to end the inning. However, Paiml beat the throw and Carrithers scored to put the Barons on top for the first time in the game at 3-2.

The Suns would load the bases against Birmingham reliever Brian Omogrosso in the bottom of the ninth, however Tim Torres flied out to left field to end the game as the Suns lost 3-2. Reliever Johnnie Lowe (4-2) earned the win for Birmingham while Marinez was saddled with the loss and Omogrosso took his second save of the year.

Lost in the shuffle of the end of game dramatics were two fine pitching performances by the starting pitchers. Jacksonville's Graham Taylor threw six scoreless innings where he only allowed two hits and also struck out a season-high seven batters without issuing a walk. Birmingham's Joe Bisenius matched Taylor as he also went six innings scoreless, giving up four hits, walking two, and striking out seven.

The clubs will play the finale of the series on Wednesday afternoon at the Baseball Grounds. Jacksonville will start right-hander Joey O'Gara 4-1, 4.05) while the Barons will start left-hander Charlie Leesman (5-1, 3.95). Wednesday afternoon will be a "Businessperson Special" at the Baseball Grounds, as $15.50 will buy fans a box seat, large hot dog, and a large beverage of their choice.
