Russell Continues Torrid Pace to Lead Lookouts
June 7, 2011 - Southern League (SL1)
Chattanooga Lookouts News Release
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Kyle Russell showed why he was selected as a Southern League All-Star by blasting to home runs to lead the Lookouts to an exciting 7-4 win over the Carolina Mudcats in Tuesday night action at AT&T Field.
In a little case of déjàvu from last night, Kyle Russell led off the second inning with a solo shot to five the Lookouts an early 1-0 lead.
Carolina countered in the top of the third with a two-run shot by Neftali Perez to usurp the lead from the Lookouts.
The Mudcats scored another run in the fourth frame, but the Lookouts negated that run in the bottom portion of the inning on a solo shot from Brian Cavazos-Galvez.
Felix Perez extended the Mudcats' lead to 4-2 in the fifth by nailing an RBI single.
The Lookouts tied up the score in the bottom portion of the fifth by plating two runs. Alfredo Silverio led off with a double and advanced to third on a Corey Smith single. With runners on the corners, Mudcats starting pitcher James Avery threw a wild pitch, allowing both runners to advance. Scott Van Slyke would eventually single to bring home Smith, knotting up the score, 4-4.
The eighth inning proved to be one of great interest. In the top half, Nathan Eovaldi, hitherto making all of his appearances as a starter, entered the game out of the Lookouts bullpen. Eovaldi (4-4) plowed through the Mudcats' side, hitting 101 miles per hour on the Lookouts' stadium speed gun.
Carolina brought in the flame-throwing lefty Aroldis Chapman (0-1), making a Major League rehab appearance, who proceeded to match Eovaldi on his first pitch with a fastball clocked at 101 miles per hour. Champman's evening took a precipitous fall from that point, as he gave up a single to Elian Herrera, an RBI triple to Alfredo Silverio, and a Jessie Mier walk. Two outs were sprinkled in the mix before Russell hit a towering shot over the right field wall to give the Lookouts a 7-4 lead.
Shawn Tolleson pitched a perfect ninth to notch his first save of the season for the Lookouts.
The Chattanooga Lookouts and Carolina Mudcats will wrap up their five-game series at 11:15 A.M., tomorrow. Tickets for this game or any other Lookouts home game can be purchased at the Lookouts Box Office at AT&T Field, online at www.lookouts.com, or by calling (423) 267-4849.
