
Generals Blanked by Smokies, Forces Rubber Game in Series

KODAK, TENN. (June 7, 2011 - The Generals were shutout by Tennessee Tuesday night at Smokies Park, 6-0 to even the series at 2-2, and force a rubber game on Wednesday. Jackson falls to two games back of the Smokies in the North Division, with 11 games to play in the first half. The Generals collected nine hits in the game Tuesday, but were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
Kyle Seager has hit in 11 straight games after a 1-for-4 night at the plate. Jake Shaffer and Carlos Triunfel were 2-for-4 apiece, with a double. Ryan Flaherty, Josh Vitters and Nelson Perez paced the Smokies with two hits each,
Dallas Beeler (1-0) tossed six shutout innings in his Double-A debut. The 2010 draft pick for the Cubs tossed a career high six innings and struck out four. Tom Wilhelmsen (1-1) suffered his first Double-A loss. Tom allowed three runs on five hits in four innings on the mound.
The Smokies plated three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Josh Vitters singled in Matt Spencer and then Nelson Perez hit his second Double-A homer, a 2-run shot to make the score 3-0.
In a wild bottom of the seventh inning, Brett Jackson was credited with a homerun, despite hitting midway up on the left field wall and off the glove of Joe Dunigan. The homer by Jackson gave the Smokies a 5-0 advantage. General's manager Jim Pankovits and outfielder Joe Dunigan were ejected. Later the Smokies shortstop Marwin Gonzalez was ejected on the final out of the inning.
Tennessee finished off their scoring in the bottom of the eighth with a run on a double from Josh Vitters. The Smokies pushed the lead to 6-0.
The rubber game of this addition of the I-40 series is Wednesday night, with first pitch set for 6:15 PM CDT. LHP Anthony Vasquez (3-4, 4.28) takes the mound for Jackson against RHP Robert Coello (0-1, 5.40) for Tennessee. The game can be heard on Jackson's NewsTalk 101.5 FM and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
