Montgomery Biscuits News Release

MONTGOMERY, AL - Paul Phillips delivered 4.2 solid frames in his spot-start and the Biscuits (26-33) put up five second inning runs to key a 7-4 win over the Mississippi Braves (23-36) Tuesday at Riverwalk.

It's the first time since May 19th the Biscuits have won back-to-back games.

After a Daniel Mayora RBI-single in the first made it 1-0, the first three batters reached against Mississippi starter JJ Hoover in the second inning. Reid Fronk brought home a run with a sacrifice fly, then a run scored on an error before Stephen Vogt doubled home a pair to make it 5-0. Nevin Ashley capped the frame's scoring with a two-out RBI-single, and it was 6-0 Montgomery. They'd plate one more in the fourth and Biscuits pitching would scatter four single-run frames.

Phillips (above) had not gone deeper than 2.1 in an outing this year, but came through for the Biscuits Tuesday limiting Mississippi to two runs on four hits and no walks over his 4.2. Sergio Espinosa (1-0) got the win in his first appearance since getting called back up from A+ Charlotte, allowing a run on three hits over 2.1.

Hoover (2-5) came into the game second in the league in ERA, but the Biscuits chased him after two innings. He gave up six runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks, striking out only one one start after fanning eight.

John Shelby went 2-4, launching a solo-shot to tie him for the team-lead with seven.

The series rubber match is Wednesday at 7:05. RHP Shane Dyer will toss for the Biscuits against Mississippi RHP Paul Clemens.
