Birmingham Barons News Release
Hoover, AL - Greg Paiml's RBI-bunt single capped a ninth-inning rally as the Birmingham Barons (33-25) edged the Jacksonville Suns (32-27), 3-2, Tuesday night in front of 4,034 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Chris Gutierrez lined a leadoff single in the eighth inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Paul Gran. With a runner on second base, Kevin Mattison lined a single to left field that bumped Gutierrez to third base. Gutierrez would score on an Barons attempt to turn a double play as second baseman Alden Carrithers' missed catch error allowed everyone to reach. Luke Montz lined a RBI single that plated Mattison as the Suns took a 2-0 lead.
Down by two runs in the ninth inning, Brandon Short drew a leadoff walk and raced to second on Seth Loman's single to center field. Following a wild pitch that advanced the runners to second and third, Christian Marrero drew a walk that loaded the bases. With the sacks packed, Carrithers knocked home Short and reached on fielder's choice that eliminated Loman at third. Kenny Willimams, Jr. lined a single to center that plated Marrero as Carrithers raced to third base. Paiml reached on a bunt single that knocked in Carrithers for the eventual game-winning run, 3-2.
Johnnie Lowe (4-2) earned the victory in relief as the righty surrendered two runs (one earned) on three hits in 2.0 IP. Reliever Brian Omogrosso (S, 2) collected a save after he tossed 1.0 scoreless IP with 3 hits, 1 walk and 2 strikeouts. A no-decision was given to starter Joe Bisenius when the right-hander tossed 6.0 scoreless IP with 4 hits, 2 walks and 7 strikeouts.
Suns reliever Jhan Martinez (1-4) was handed the defeat when he was charged with one earned run on 2 hits, 1 walk and 1 strikeout in 1.0 IP. Graham Taylor was handed a no-decision after the southpaw tossed 6.0 scoreless IP with two hits and seven strikeouts.
Birmingham and Jacksonville finish their five-game series with a 12:05 p.m. first pitch Wednesday afternoon at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The Barons turn to southpaw Charlie Leesman (5-1, 3.95) while the Suns hand the ball to right-hander Joseph O'Gara (4-2, 4.05).
