Barney, Diamond Named to PCL All-Star Team
July 1, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release
Des Moines, IA - Iowa Cub players Darwin Barney and Thomas Diamond have both been named to the 2010 Pacific Coast League All-Star Team the league office announced Thursday.
Barney, in his second year with Iowa, is the first I-Cub shortstop to be selected for all-star honors since former Cub Ronny Cedeno was chosen in 2005.
Barney is one of the premier shortstops in the PCL. He leads the PCL in games played at short (73) and sports a .971 fielding percentage. Barney has accumulated 108 putouts, 190 assists and has only nine errors in 307 total chances. He's also had a hand in 38 of Iowa's 59 double plays turned this season.
The Oregon State alum has also been showcasing his offensive prowess. He currently holds a .289 batting average with 17 doubles, two triples and 25 RBIs. He hit .360 in the month of May and his 90 hits this season lead the team and rank fifth in the PCL.
For Diamond, this year's all-star selection marks his third mid-season honor and fifth overall. Diamond was last named to an all-star squad in 2006 for the Texas League as a member of the Frisco RoughRiders. Diamond was 5-3 with a 4.19 ERA in 14 games for Frisco before the mid-season break. He ended the year 12-5 with a 4.24 ERA in 27 games and went on to collect postseason accolades as well.
After being assigned to Iowa during the spring, Diamond has been nothing short of outstanding. He's currently 5-2 with a 2.53 ERA in 16 starts this season. He leads the PCL in strikeouts (87) and opponent average (.203) and ranks fourth in WHIP (1.13), sandwiched between teammates Jay Jackson (1.10) and Mitch Atkins (1.19).
His success this season has been a great addition to Iowa's pitching staff. He was claimed off of waivers last September from the Texas Rangers after ending the season in double-A with Frisco. Diamond was a rising star in the Ranger's organization and was tabbed as the Ranger's top prospect in 2005 by Baseball America. However, he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2007 and missed the entire season.
The Triple-A All Star game will be played on July 14 at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pa. It is being hosted by the Lehigh Valley Ironpigs, the triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies.
