Redbirds Slip by Express in Opener

MEMPHIS, TN - Memphis used a late rally to down Round Rock 5-3 Thursday night at AutoZone Park to win the series opener.

With the game tied 3-3 in the seventh Donovan Solano's solo homer put the Redbirds on top and Jon Jay's sacrifice fly scored Jim Rapoport, who had tripled, to extend the lead to two runs. The ‘Birds bullpen sealed the victory from there with Eduardo Sanchez and Josh Kinney turning in one scoreless inning each and Kinney notching his fourth save of the year. Solano and Rapoport had two hits apiece to lead Memphis. Brian Bogusevic hit a two-run homer and went 2-for-5 to pace the Express.

Rich Rundles picked up the win in relief with one inning of work. The Memphis bullpen turned in four scoreless innings striking out four and allowing three hits after starter P.J. Walters left with an injury in the sixth inning. Walters allowed three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in five-plus innings. Yorman Bazardo took the loss for Round Rock giving up three runs on four hits across 3.1 innings. Express starter Wesley Wright walked four batters but did not surrender a hit in his 3.2 innings.

The ‘Birds and Express play tomorrow night with the first 1500 fans receiving a Redbirds team card set presented by DiGiorno. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Pacific Coast League All-Star Brandon Dickson gets the ball for the home team and will face Round Rock's Polin Trinidad.
