ECHL Bakersfield Condors

Bakersfield President Matt Riley responds to KERO editorial

Bakersfield Condors News Release

By reading this ‘editorial' it appears to us that the writer actually thought some sort of brawl was going to take place in the stands. To clarify, and to give people the whole story, the promotion is regarding a fight ON THE ICE, within the context of the sport. Anyone showing any type of aggression in the stands is dealt with quickly and efficiently before anything escalates.

Fighting, as it is defined within the sport of hockey, is part of the very limited scope of a hockey game, just as are goals and saves. However, since it appears from your ‘commentary' that you've never been to a hockey game, or quite possibly a sporting event of any kind, you might not be familiar with those terms and definitions either. You may be familiar with the sport of boxing, where two people stand face to face and pound on each other for hours. Physical contact is part of sports, and sports are one thing that we as a society have going for us.

Condors hockey is about fun and spending time with your family and friends. To compare us to gang violence and senseless bloodshed is absolutely preposterous and ludicrous.

We are hardly ‘inciting violence'. Our players know fighting is not the way to resolve problems but in defense of our "house" and within the guidelines of hockey, strong measures need to be taken, at times. It's fortunate the majority of people in Bakersfield (also known as Condorstown to many) realize that it's in everyone's best interest to support professional sports in Bakersfield by being positive and not negative, and realize this is a tongue in cheek promotion, not a call for mass violence.

Please let us know when you can attend a Condors game, so you can experience what a great product it is. In the chance you're willing to attend tonight's game; we'll have two tickets for you at Will Call.
