Bakersfield goes 2-0-1 against first place teams

The Bakersfield Condors took five out of a possible six points last week in facing off against Las Vegas Wranglers and Victoria Salmon Kings, the two division leaders in the National Conference. The week ended with a win over the Wranglers in front of 6,771 fans at Rabobank Arena Friday night.

The Condors are 11-20-7 on the season and in 4th place in the Pacific Division, but are gaining ground in the playoff chase. Bakersfield trails the third place Stockton Thunder by nine points in the Pacific Division, and is just five points behind the Phoenix RoadRunners, who are in eighth place in the National Conference playoff race. After the All-Star Break this week, the Condors return home to host Phoenix on Friday and the Idaho Steelheads on Saturday.

Condors 5 vs. VICTORIA 1

The Condors surrendered the first goal of the game, but rattled off five unanswered goals to skate to a 5-1 win over host Victoria. G Michel Robinson stopped 31 shots between the pipes and five different players lit the lamp for Bakersfield. It was the first win of the year for the Condors over the Salmon Kings, who had not lost in regulation on home ice since Oct. 26, and gave Bakersfield back-to-back wins.

Wednesday, Jan. 16

VICTORIA 5 vs. Condors 4, OT

LW Mark Derlago scored twice in the third period to erase a two-goal deficit and force overtime, but the Salmon Kings scored just 29 seconds in to earn the victory. Derlago's second of the period came with just 10 seconds left in regulation, and Bakersfield also received goals from D Joe Dustin and C Tim Konsorada, his 20th of the season. The Condors fired a season-high 53 shots on goal in the contest.

LW Mark Derlago's second goal of the game served as the game winner with just 2:06 left in regulation, propelling the Condors to a 4-3 win over the visiting Wranglers. Derlago, who extended his goal scoring streak to four games, also scored the first of the night for Bakersfield, and the Condors came from a 2-0 deficit in the opening period to skate to the win. F Todd Griffith and C Tim Konsorada also scored for Bakersfield.

ALL-STAR FESTIVITIES:

The Chase Chevrolet ECHL All-Star Skills Competition will take place Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Two Condors are participating in the Skills Competition and All-Star Game - F Todd Griffith will compete in the fastest skater and breakaway relay contests, and D Kevin Truelson will participate in the breakaway relay and hardest shot competitions.

The 2008 Chase Chevrolet ECHL All-Star Game will take place this Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. (Pacific) from the Stockton Arena. D Kevin Truelson (in the starting lineup) and F Todd Griffith will both represent Bakersfield for the National Conference. The game will be carried live on KGEO AM 1230. The Skills Competition, as well as the game Wednesday night, will both air live, free of charge, online on B2 Networks.

PLAYER AND TEAM NOTES:

RW Chris Di Ubaldo, who signed with the team on Monday, made his Condors debut on Tuesday night and recorded an assist. Recently acquired LW Tom Boudreau (from Reading on Jan. 13), also notched an assist in his Condors debut Friday night.

The Condors, who are second in the ECHL in average attendance, have drawn over 6,000 fans in eight of their 17 home games.

The Condors are tied for the ECHL lead with 11 shorthanded goals. Ten of those have come on the road, which is tops in the league.

LW Mark Derlago, who is second on the Condors in goals with 14, has lit the lamp in four straight games (including back-to-back two-goal performances) with six-goals during that stretch.

C Tim Konsorada (3g-1a) and C Sean Venedam (0g-5a) each have four-game point streaks. Konsorada also has a goal in three consecutive matches.

G Michel Robinson, who has started four straight games, is 3-1-1 with a 3.00 GAA and .914 save percentage since joining Bakersfield.

F Eric Sonnenberg remains on the 3-day IR, though he is eligible to return.

D Jay Langager remains on the 7-day IR, but he is eligible to return.

C Mike Hofstrand remains on the 30-day IR, and is eligible to return on Jan. 25.

PROMOTIONAL NOTES:

The Condors return to home ice to face off against the Phoenix RoadRunners on Friday, Jan. 25. That night, the ZOOperstars return to The Nest, presented by KGET-TV 17, 98.5 The Fox and California Water Service. The ZOOperstars are 10- foot tall animal caricatures of famous sports stars, such as Snail Earnhardt, Jr., LeBronco James, Peyton Manatee, Monkey Mantle, Donovan McCrabb, and Deion Salamanders. The ZOOperstars are an all- time Condorstown favorite you won't want to miss!

On Saturday, Jan. 26 the reigning Kelly Cup Champion Idaho Steelheads come to town, and the first 2,000 kids 12 and under will receive a Condors Zamboni Piggy Bank, courtesy of Pirate Radio 93.1 and the Bakersfield Californian.

Doors open at 6 p.m., puck drops at 7 p.m. both nights.

Saturday's game will be televised live on Bright House Networks Channel 21, and will be re-aired on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. Each televised game this season will be available to digital cable subscribers via Bakersfield On Demand (channel 300) beginning the Tuesday after the original air date.
