Royals Drop Holiday Game To Dayton, 4-1
January 21, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The Reading Royals (22-16-3=47, 3rd North Division) of the ECHL fell behind and were unable to muster sufficient quality opportunities to pull off a credible comeback attempt in a 4-1 loss to the Dayton Bombers in a matinee match-up at the Sovereign Center. The Royals allowed the opposition to bag the game's first goal for the ninth consecutive time at home and found themselves trailing by three (once again) as they entered the third period. However, this time-unlike Saturday when the Royals came back from a three goal third period deficit to win in overtime-there would be no 'miracle on Penn Street' as Dayton's Rejean Beauchemin (10-7-5; 45/46) did all he needed to do to keep the Royals at bay. Royals' goaltender Jon Quick (14-10-2; 23/26) did not have much of a memorable day on his twenty-second birthday.
Dayton struck first 17:35 into the game off a transition rush when Chanse Fitzpatrick skated deep on the right wing side and ripped a hard, low slap shot that eluded Quick for his nineteenth goal of the year. Fourteen seconds later Mike Walsh threw a shot on goal that Quick kicked out with the right pad. The rebound went right back up the gut, however, and Matt Beaudoin came sniping in for his twenty-sixth of the season. The Royals turned on the heat in the second period, out-shooting the Bombers 24 to 8; but Dayton would register the only goal, when Ryan Smyth carried deep on the left wing side-Smyth's off wing-and took a snap shot that beat Quick low to the glove side. The Royals got the fans' pulse racing a bit when they scored 2:24 into the third period. Larry Courville fired a shot from the left circle that Beauchemin kicked out. However, the rebound went directly to the stick of Marc Cavosie, who was planted low on the right side; and Cavosie ripped a quick shot home for his ninth of the year. Although the Royals out-shot the Bombers 12-3 in the third, Dayton did a good job keeping the majority of opportunities to the deep perimeter where they were, for the most part, harmlessly handled by Beauchemin. With the win, the Bombers climbed to within four points of the Royals for the third slot in the North Division with two games in hand.
Reading returns to action (after the all-star break) on Saturday night (7:00 pm) against the Trenton Devils at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, New Jersey. The game night broadcast on Saturday will begin at 6:30 pm with the pre-game warm-up show on ESPN Radio 1240 am in Ephrata, as well as on the internet through the Royals' website, www.royalshockey.com. Streaming video is available on a pay per view basis through the B2 Networks.
