Bombers Salvage Road Trip With 4-1 Win Over Reading
January 21, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release
Reading, PA- The defending American Conference Champion Dayton Bombers ended their four-game losing skid with a convincing 4-1 victory over the Reading Royals during a matinee matchup Monday afternoon at the Sovereign Center.
Spending Sunday in Reading seemed to pay off early for the Bombers, who came into Monday's game at the tail end of a five game road trip, as they matched tempo with division rival Reading Royals in the early going of period one. Neither team would be able to find the back of the net until Dayton's Chanse Fitzpatrick scored his 19th goal of the season from an on-the tape pass from Mike Berry at the 17:35 mark. Ahead 1-0, Dayton wasted no time setting up once more, this time for the team-leading 26th goal of the season for ECHL All-Star forward Matt Beaudoin just 14 seconds later at 17:49. The goal, assisted by Mike Walsh and All-Star Yannick Tifu, proved to be the eventual game-winner and fifth game-winning goal for the ECHL's top rookie Beaudoin. Leading the Royals 2-0, Dayton outshot Reading 16-10 at the break.
In similar fashion to the opener, the second period saw both teams continue to battle on both ends of the ice yet despite multiple chances; Reading could not penetrate Bombers netminder Rejean Beauchemin in the middle stanza. Dayton scored the period's lone goal at the 11:32 mark with Ryan Smith notching his 9th goal of the season assisted by Taylor Christie. Behind by three goals, their second period effort would show in shots on goal, with reading blasting Dayton 24-8 for a forty-minute total of 34-24 in favor of Reading.
Picking up where they left off in the second, Reading finally joined the scoresheet just 2:24 into the third period courtesy of the Royals Mike Cavosie's 9th goal of the season. Dayton maintained a two-goal lead throughout the third period despite being out shot thanks to a great effort by Beauchemin between the pipes. With time winding down in regulation, Yannick Tifu found himself with an empty-net breakaway before being hauled down by a back checking Royals defender. The resulting call by referee Ghislain Hebert awarded an automatic goal to Yannick Tifu, unassisted, at the 19:25 mark for the 4-1 final score. Shots in the period favored Reading 12-3 for a game total of 46-27 Royals.
Dayton's win boosts their record to 18-14-7 overall for 43 points. The Bombers maintain sole possession of fourth place and break a four-game winless streak on the road.
The Bombers finally return home to the comfy confines of the Nutter Center for game one of a home and home series against the Johnstown Chiefs on Friday, January 25 at 7pm. Tickets are still available, and can be purchased at the Nutter Center box office or by calling the Bombers office at 775-4747. Fans can tune into the game broadcast featuring Bombers broadcaster JT Szabo via b2 Networks at echl.com, daytonbombers.com and b2livetv.com starting 10 minutes prior to faceoff.
