Indianapolis Indians News Release
ST. PAUL, Minn. - Ji-Hwan Bae launched a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning to put the Indianapolis Indians out of reach of the St. Paul Saints and take the sixth game of a seven-game set on Saturday night, 7-4.
Down 3-2 after surrendering a two-run lead, the Indians (24-22) plated four runs in the fifth to recapture the lead for good. After Hoy Park roped a leadoff double, Carter Bins grooved a single up the middle to tie the game at three. With two outs in the inning, Bae's fifth longball of the season gave Indy a 5-3 lead. Bligh Madris then doubled to score Mason Martin and tack on the fourth run of the inning.
The Indians got on the board first for the fifth consecutive game against the Saints after the first three batters hit safely. Canaan Smith-Njigba led the game off with a base hit and scored after Travis Swaggerty belted an RBI triple over the center fielder's head. Bae then shot a single to the opposite field to score Swaggerty and take an early 2-0 lead.
St. Paul (19-27) took the lead in the third frame with three runs off four hits. Royce Lewis singled and stole second to put himself in scoring position before Alex Kirilloff hit an RBI line drive to center field. Spencer Steer then hit a two-run blast to put the Saints ahead 3-2 before Indy's comeback.
Ronny Henriquez (L, 0-2) managed to put together three scoreless innings with eight strikeouts after allowing two runs in the first inning, but was charged with three of Indy's four runs after exiting the fifth inning with two outs.
Bryse Wilson (W, 1-0) tossed 6.0 innings in his first start with Indianapolis. He allowed four runs off six hits and fanned eight in his outing. Eric Hanhold and Aaron Fletcher combined to hold St. Paul scoreless for the final three frames.
Bae, Swaggerty and Bins each notched multi-hit games for the Indians. Bae went 2-for-5 with a team-leading three RBI to extend his on-base streak to a career-high 25 games.
The Indians and Saints will face off in the rubber match on Sunday night at 6:07 PM ET. RHP Cole Sands will take the mound for the Saints while the Indians have yet to name a starter.
