Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Monarchs took home their eighth consecutive win at home with a 1-0 shutout victory over the Providence Bruins in front of 7,910 fans at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night. The win marks goaltender Jason LaBarbera's seventh shutout of the season and 28th overall giving him sole possession of sixth place in AHL shutout history.
Manchester (36-15-6-1) is leading the Atlantic Division with 79 points. Providence (31-23-1-3) is ranked second place in the Atlantic Division with 66 points.
The Monarchs came out firing and recorded the first and only goal of the game at 1:37 of the opening period. Defenseman Bryan Schmidt controlled the puck and passed it up to left wing Matt Moulson. Charging into the zone, Moulson took the puck from wing-to-wing and discarded it toward the net from the left face-off circle. Center Gabe Gauthier, perched on the crease, deflected the puck past the glove of Bruins netminder Philippe Sauve for his 12th goal of the season.
LaBarbera fronted the charge with a 41 shutout performance. Sauve took the loss stopping 27-of-28 shots.
Manchester went 0-for-4 on the power play. Providence was 0-for-5 while playing with the man advantage.
