Lowell, MA - The Hartford Wolf Pack (32-20-3-0) scored four goals in the third period to pull away from the Lowell Devils (26-23-5-2) and hand them a 6-1 defeat at the Tsongas Arena on Friday night.
Lowell struck first in the game, scoring the only goal of the first period. Mike Pandolfo, recently recalled from the Trenton Titans (ECHL), scored his first goal of the season in a Devils uniform. Peter Vrana and Andy Greene assisted on the power-play goal. Hartford outshot the Devils 13-9 in the first frame.
Only 26 seconds into the second period, Hartford was awarded a seven minute power play. Following a collision between Hartford forward Greg Moore and Devils G Jordan Parise, Mike Mottau came to the aid of his goaltender and it led to a scuffle. As a result, Mottau was assessed two minor penalties, a fighting major, and a 10-minute misconduct. Despite the length of the Hartford power play, the Devils penalty kill successfully thwarted the advantage. Later in the period, however, Har tford's power play would tie the score. After Parise was penalized for high-sticking, Hartford got on the board as Jarko Immonen tallied the first of his two goals on the evening. Hartford added another goal before the period ended and held a 30-17 advantage in shots going into the third.
In the final stanza, the Wolf Pack peppered Parise with 19 shots, and scored four times in the period to snap the Devils four-game home winning streak. The loss, combined with a Portland Pirates win over the Worcester Sharks means that the Devils are now in a three-team tie for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Atlantic Division.
The Devils remain on home ice to host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Saturday for a special 2:05 p.m. matinee before traveling to Springfield to face the Falcons on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. All Devils games, home and away, can be heard on WCAP 980AM with the Voice of the Devils, Ryan Johnston, or online through B2 Networks on www.lowelldevilshockey.com.
