Sudbury Wolves News Release

(Greater Sudbury, ON) - The Sudbury Wolves are thrilled to announce that Artem Gonchar, the club's 2025 first round CHL Import Draft selection, has signed with the Wolves ahead of the upcoming 2025/26 season.

"Artem is a player that we have been high on from this past season.", said Rob Papineau, Vice President and General Manager of the Sudbury Wolves. "He is a very intelligent smooth skating defenceman who was just selected in the third round in the NHL. He has great vision and offensive instincts and is a skilled playmaker. He is a 19-year-old defenceman we targeted to fill minutes lost to key graduating players. We are excited to welcome Artem and his family to Sudbury."

Gonchar is a 6-foot-1, 165-pound, left-handed defenceman from Chelyabinsk, Russia. Gonchar played most of his 2024/25 season in the MHL with Magnitogorsk Stalnye Lisy, recording 25 points (7 goals and 18 assists) in 50 games. His season earned him a third round selection (89th overall) by the New York Rangers in the 2025 NHL Draft. Artem joins the Wolves with strong family bloodlines, as he is the nephew of Sergei Gonchar, who played 1301 games in the NHL.

"I'm excited to sign with Sudbury and can't wait to start the season with my new team.", expressed Artem Gonchar.
