Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Monarchs ended 2013 with a 3-1 loss to the Providence Bruins at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Tuesday night.
Manchester (22-8-1-4) leads the Atlantic Division with 49 points. Providence (17-10-1-5) is ranked second in the Atlantic Division with 40 points.
"I never felt like we really grabbed a hold of that game," said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "We were tentative for some reason. I can't really put my finger on it, but I don't think we had enough lines going and we lacked intensity. Maybe it was the four games in six days, but I didn't like it. The first two goals, we had a lost draw with not much time left to go in the second period. We failed to block a shot and didn't have the type of face-off intensity you need to have at that point in the period and it was really deflating. Their second goal, we took a needless penalty on a hit from behind and then that led to a power play. Slow reaction by our penalty killers to cover a guy in the slot. They banged one off the post, got everyone twisted around and got a tap-in. Those two goals, obviously, were ones where we've covered that stuff over and over again. It's just a matter of being game ready and playing with intensity and passion, and I didn't see it."
The Bruins took the lead at 6:09 of the third period with right wing Seth Griffith's eighth tally of the season. Griffith gained the puck and sent a pass to left wing Justin Florek. The winger took a shot on net which was deflected aside by Monarchs goaltender J.F. Berube. Griffith then gained the rebound and fired a wrist shot beating Berube to give the Bruins at 2-1 lead.
Manchester struck first at 2:45 of the second period. Right wing Scott Sabourin scored is ninth goal of the season getting the Monarchs on the board first. Defenseman Vincent LoVerde passed the puck to forward Ian O'Connor who battled for it near the right wing face -off circle. O'Connor then passed the puck to right wing Scott Sabourin who fired a wrist shot from the blueline beating Providence goaltender Niklas Svedberg for his ninth goal of the season.
Providence tied it up late in the second period. Bruins defenseman Zach Trotman fired a slap shot from the blueline beating Berube at 18:22 of the middle frame. Griffith and center Rob Flick assisted on Trotman's second goal of the season.
Bruins left wing Craig Cunningham score late in the third to give Providence a two goal lead. Center Carter Camper passed the puck to Cunningham in the neutral zone where he skated over the Monarchs blueline, and tossed a shot into the empty net at 19:27 in the third period making the final score 3-1.
Berube (13-7-2) took his seventh loss of the season making 20 saves on 22 shots. Svedberg (13-5-3) earned his 13th win of the season, stopping 41-of-42 shots.
Manchester was 0-for-3 on the power play. Providence went 1-for-1 with the man advantage.
