Worcester Sharks News Release
Glens Falls, NY - The Worcester Sharks (13-13-2-1, 29pts) closed out the 2013 calendar year with a hard fought 2-1 loss to the host Adirondack Phantoms (16-13-0-2, 34pts) in front of 3,381 fans at the Glens Falls Civic Center in Glens Falls, NY on Tuesday evening. Game three of the Sharks five game road trip continues on Friday with a 7:05pm faceoff in Providence vs. the Bruins.
Marek Viedensky evened the score with 5:22 left in the third period for the Sharks but a late strike by Kris Newbury won the game for the Phantoms at 18:47. The two teams combined for 90 penalty minutes in a physical affair as Harri Sateri was solid in net for Worcester as he made 29 saves in the loss.
The first period was fast and furious with the two clubs combining for 68 penalty minutes with four sets of fighting majors. Curt Gogol (7th FM) dropped Matt Mangene (1st FM) with a flurry of rights at 2:49 to set the tone early. A near line brawl broke out at 11:15 as Jimmy Bonneau (7th FM) and Zach Fitzgerald (7th FM) engaged in a long battle while Taylor Doherty (5th FM) and Steven Delisle (3rd FM) also dropped the mitts and received game misconducts. Seven seconds later, Curt Gogol (8th FM) fought the much bigger Doug Clarkson (1st FM) for the 4th set of major penalties in a feisty opening frame. Harri Sateri made nine first period saves for Worcester while Cal Heeter made eight saves for the Phantoms in a scoreless first period.
Neither team found the back of the net in the middle frame either, although the Phantoms had the majority of the chances with Harri Sateri standing tall. Adirondack outshot Worcester 11-9 in the second period as the two teams headed into the 2nd intermission scoreless.
The Phantoms would strike 1st in the third period on the power play as captain Ben Holmstrom shot home a deflected bouncing puck in front of the Worcester net past Harri Sateri at 8:09 to put Adirondack ahead 1-0. The Sharks would tie the score at 14:38 after their 3rd power play expired and a Matt Tennyson shot that missed the net zipped off the end wall and right to the stick of Marek Viedensky (4th) who then slammed home the puck past Cal Heeter. Worcester had some great chances to go ahead late, but a moonshot clearing attempt from the Phantoms zone broke Kris Newbury (7th) free down the left wing side and Newbury buried a wicked shot from 35 feet with 1:22 remaining for the eventual game winner.
The Sharks overall record falls to 13-13-2-1, 29pts and 7-6-2-0, 16pts on the road this season.
