Falcons Top IceCaps in New Year's Eve Matinee

Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Falcons (22-5-1-3) defeated the St. John's IceCaps by the final score of 4-2 Tuesday afternoon at the MassMutual Center, scoring twice in the third period to seal the victory.

Jean-Francois Jacques notched the game-winning goal at 1:18 of the third period, giving Springfield its first lead of the contest. For Jacques, the goal was his third of the season and first since December 4.

Andrew Joudrey extended the Falcons lead with an insurance goal at 18:07 of the final frame.

Netminder Jeremy Smith earned his AHL-best 15th victory of the season, making 31 saves on 33 shots between the posts for Springfield. The Dearborn, Michigan native finished the month with a 6-2-1 record in December.

After a Zach Redmond roughing penalty with five seconds left in the second period, the Falcons made the IceCaps pay before the end of the stanza. Right off the faceoff, Jonathan Marchessault fired a shot from the high slot that beat St. John's goaltender Eddie Pasquale. Marchessault leads the team with 26 points, 12 goals and seven power-play goals. The 5-foot-9, 180-pound forward finished the month of December with 15 points (eight goals, seven assists).

Lukas Sedlak scored the first Springfield goal at 14:56 of the first period, evening the score at 1-1. For Sedlak, the tally was his fifth of the season and first since November 1.

The IceCaps goals were scored by Kyle MacKinnon at 10:37 of the first period and Kael Mouillierat at 5:57 of the second period.

Pasquale stopped 29 of 33 shots in net for St. John's.

The Falcons are back in action Friday, January 3 when they visit the Albany Devils at the Times Union Center. Springfield returns to the MassMutual Center Saturday, January 4 to host the Providence Bruins at 7:00 p.m. Garden legend Rene Rancourt will perform the National Anthem and sign autographs for fans at Saturday's game.
