St. John's IceCaps News Release
The St. John's IceCaps dropped their final game of 2013 by a 4-2 score to the Northeast Division leading Springfield Falcons in a New Year's Eve Matinee Tuesday at MassMutual Center in Springfield, MA.
Springfield scored three consecutive goals after being down 2-1, including a power play tally by Jonathan Marchessault with just two seconds left in the second, to hand St. John's its 13th regulation loss of the season.
Kael Mouillierat had a goal and an assist for the IceCaps, while Eddie Pasquale stopped 29-of-33 shots in the loss.
Kyle MacKinnon opened the scoring for St. John's at 10:37 of the first on a great forecheck in the Falcons zone. After MacKinnon retrieved the dump-in, Mouillierat grabbed the puck down low and headed around the net before slipping a backside pass to MacKinnon in front. The Walnut, CA native one-timed his third of the season past Jeremy Smith to make it 1-0.
Springfield tied the game after it killed off a penalty at 14:56 of the frame. Jake Hansen stepped out of the box and gave his team a three-on-two rush, where he fed Lukas Sedlak, who went backhand and beat Pasquale.
Mouillierat responded for St. John's in the second period at the 3:57 mark. Jordan Hill's shot attempt got caught up in front of the Falcons net but Mouillierat was there to shovel in the loose puck and give the IceCaps a 2-1 advantage.
With just two seconds remaining in the second period, the Falcons tied the score once again. After a Zach Redmond roughing minor with five seconds left, Marchessault snapped a shot off the faceoff that beat Pasquale high and knotted the score at two heading into the third period.
In the third, the Falcons surged ahead 1:18 into the period on a fortunate bounce. Darryl Boyce centred a pass that deflected off the skate of Jacques and trickled over the goal line past Pasquale, giving the home team a 3-2 lead.
Springfield iced it with 1:53 left in regulation on Andrew Joudrey's sixth. Former IceCap Spencer Machacek sent a pass out front that was gobbled up by Joudrey, who deked to the backhand and slipped the puck through Pasquale to make it 4-2.
The IceCaps head home to start an eight-game home stand beginning Saturday against the Portland Pirates (7:30 PM NT).
