Norfolk Admirals News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - Nathan Lawson made 36 saves to help lift the Binghamton Senators to a 3-2 victory over the Norfolk Admirals Tuesday evening at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. Norfolk (16-12-1-4) sees its win streak end at three. The Admirals will enter 2014 in the third spot in the East Division just four points back of the first place Senators.
Both teams had several opportunities on the power play to score the game's first goal, but each penalty kill unit was able to rise to the occasion and keep the game scoreless after the first 20 minutes of play.
Norfolk did strike first at 2:15 of the middle frame. Rickard Rakell picked up the puck in the corner and carried to the top of the crease. Rakell jammed the puck twice at the net, and slipped the second shot past Senators netminder Nathan Lawson for the goal to give Norfolk a 1-0 lead.
The Senators countered the Norfolk goal just 35 seconds later. Moments following a faceoff win, Stephane De Costa slid a pass across the ice to Matt Puempel who one-timed a shot past Admirals goaltender John Gibson to tie the game at one.
The Senators grabbed the lead before the end of the second when Andre Peterrson wristed a tough angle shot from the goaline that beat Gibson on the glove side to put Binghamton on top 2-1 after 40 minutes played.
Binghamton added to its lead halfway through the third on a delayed penalty. Norfolk was unable to touch up the puck, and the Senators took advantage by feeding the puck to Jim O'Brien in the slot who wristed a shot past Gibson to extend the lead to 3-1.
The Admirals had a golden opportunity late in the third with a 5-on-3 power play for a 1:48. Stingy play by the Senators' penalty kill, coupled with good goaltending by Lawson, killed off the penalty to maintain the two-goal edge. Norfolk finished the game 0-for-7 on the power play.
The Admirals made it interesting with 29 seconds remaining in regulation. Alex Grant fed a cross-crease pass to Emerson Etem who shoved the puck into the net on the backside to pull Norfolk within one.
Despite some late pressure by the Admirals in the closing seconds, Lawson and company was able to hold on for the 3-2 victory.
Lawson was solid in net turning aside 36 of 38 shots, while Gibson takes the loss allowing three goals on 23 shots faced.
