July 14, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Elevys Gonzalez scored the game-winning run in the 18th inning as Albuquerque (56-42) defeated the Iowa Cubs (48-50) 5-1 ending the longest game in franchise history taking five hours and thirty-one minutes to complete. The Isotopes head into the All-Star break at a season-high 14 games over .500 and two games in front of the Round Rock Express in first place in the American Southern Division standings.
Gonzalez walked to open the frame and advanced to second on a Dee Gordon bunt single. He came in to score on throwing error by Casey Coleman (2-2, 3.93). Justin Sellers delivered an insurance run driving Gordon home on a sacrifice fly.
Chili Buss batted eight times establishing a 2013 team-high. He collected three hits as one of three Isotopes with a multi-hit game. The All-Star outfielder collected two RBI on his 18th-inning triple and has ten triples on the year leading the team. Buss also ranks first on the club and second in the Pacific Coast League with 71 RBI.
Albuquerque used a season-high 21 players in today's game. Ten pitchers combined for 18 innings holding the I-Cubs to just one run. Starter Matt Palmer went the most innings of any hurler for the Isotopes allowing a run on two hits over 5.1 frames. He walked four and struck out four.
Anthony Ortega and Red Patterson were strong at the back end of the bullpen each firing two scoreless innings from the 11th-14th innings. Patterson has allowed just one earned run over his last eight appearances (12.2 IP). The pair each struck out two batters. Southpaw Kelvin De La Cruz preceded the two punching out a game-high three.
Peter Moylan (4-1, 3.00) stepped in the 15th and dominated his three innings of work earning his second win in as many games. The Australian hurler has allowed just two hits and one earned run in five appearances since returning to the Isotopes from Los Angeles on July 2.
Elevys Gonzalez came in as a pinch hitter and stayed in to play second base but ultimately finished the game on the mound. It was his first pitching appearance of his career. He faced three batters tossing a scoreless 18th shutting the door on Iowa. Isotopes pitchers surrendered just seven hits.
Both sides plated a run in the sixth inning which were the only runs scored through 17 innings. Right fielder Alex Catellanos (2-for-4, R, RBI, BB) launched his 13th home run of the season in the sixth with two outs in the frame. Castellanos took sole possession of the team-lead for homers leaping ahead Buss. The Isotopes will return to Albuquerque to face the Omaha Storm Chaser following the All-Star break beginning Thursday, July 18 at 7:05 PM. Both sides have yet to announce a starter to open the series. Listen to all the action on 610 "The Sports Animal" with Josh Suchon on the call.
