Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (51-45) jumped out to an early 6-1 lead and end up defeating the Salt Lake Bees (54-44) 12-5 in the last game of their longest homestand of the season and their last game before the All-star break.
Corey Dickerson continued to prove why he is one of the league's top players, in the top of the first inning, when he hammered his 11th home run of the season to right field to plate Charlie Culberson who led off the inning with a double. The team added one more inning in the opening stanza when Tyler Colvin knocked home Xavier Nady, who was walked by Bees' starting pitcher Jarrett Grube (L, 3-4).
Salt Lake added a run in the next inning on a RBI single by John Hester, but the Sky Sox' offense continued to roll in the bottom of the inning when Culberson clubbed his second double of the day and was brought home on a RBI single by Tim Wheeler. The team's extra-base hit bonanza continued in the third inning when Tyler Colvin drove home Ben Paulsen on a RBI triple, and then scored on a double by Lars Davis. Colvin's triple is the team's 62nd of the year which is the third highest total in team history.
Up 6-1 in the fourth the Sky Sox were held scoreless in an inning for the only time today. They resumed their scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning on a RBI single by Wheeler and tacked on two more runs on a two-run double by Hernan Iribarren in the sixth.
In the top of the seventh inning reliever Mike McClendon replaced starting pitcher Jeff Francis (W, 2-2) who was spectacular for the Sox. The lefty earned his second win in a row for the team after only allowing one run on five hits in six innings while striking out five batters. Francis has now had four straight starts where he has allowed two or less runs while going five or more innings.
The Bees' offense woke up against the bullpen, scoring four runs over the last three innings including a home run and a RBI double by Chris Nelson, but were unable to outpace the Sox' offense.
Colorado Springs now heads into the All-star break with a 51-45 record which marks only the fourth time in team history that the Sky Sox have had 50 wins by the PCL All-star break. The last time the team had 50 wins by the Al-star break was in 2009 when they went 51-39. After the three-day break the team returns to action on July 18th when they travel to Arizona to face the Tucson Padres for a four-game series.
Sky Sox Notes: Over the last two games Charlie Culberson has gone 8-10 with a triple, two doubles, six runs, three RBIs, one walk and a stolen base. He also raises his hitting streak to eight games.
