Peoria Rivermen News Release
Houston, TX (December 16, 2005) - Although the Peoria Rivermen scored more goals on Friday evening in Houston than they had in either of the club's previous two games, Peoria's three lamp-lighters on Friday were not enough to triumph over the homestanding Houston Aeros. The Aeros dented the twine a total of five times and earned a 5-3 victory in front of 5,087 fans at the Toyota Center.
With this loss by the Rivermen, the team's current losing streak grows to five games. The skid began back on Wednesday, December 7, when the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights dealt the Rivermen a 3-2 loss at their Carver Arena home. The Rivermen then lost three games in three consecutive nights last weekend, falling first on the road in Chicago on Friday, then at home versus Milwaukee on Saturday, and once again at Chicago on Sunday.
The Rivermen now claim an overall record of 15-11-0-1, and the squad is 6-5-0-0 on the road. The Aeros, on the other hand, improve to 20-8-1-1 overall and to 11-2-1-1 at home in the Toyota Center.
The Rivermen started off well in this contest, garnering the first lead of the game in the first period. On a nice passing play, defenseman Doug Lynch and forward Ryan Ramsay combined to set up center Trent Whitfield for an even-strength goal at 7:43.
The Aeros, though, evened the score at 1-1 on a goal by right wing Kirby Law at the 15:12 mark of the first frame.
Then in the second period, the Aeros got out ahead of the Rivermen. Center Rem Murray put Houston up 2-1 at 3:16 of the second, and the Aeros' lead grew to 3-1 thanks to a lamp-lighter by winger Roman Voloshenko at the 6:11 mark.
Twice in the third period the Rivermen drew to within one goal of the Aeros. Taking a pass from left wing Peter Sejna during a Peoria power play, right wing Mike Glumac wired a shot from the high slot through some traffic in front to make the score 3-2 in favor of Houston at 8:17 of the third frame.
After center Patrick O'Sullivan had restored Houston's two-goal lead at 4-2 at 11:02 of the third, Peoria pared down the lead again. On another Peoria power play, Rivermen captain Brendan Buckley found center Blake Evans with a pass into the left circle. Evans then got off a quick shot that beat Aeros goalie Josh Harding to the stick side at 17:31 of the third period.
Trailing 4-3 in the waning moments of regulation, the Rivermen pulled netminder Reinhard Divis in favor of a sixth attacker. The move failed, however, as the Aeros tallied an empty-net goal at 19:45 of the third period to win 5-3.
The Rivermen and the Aeros get right back at it on Saturday with another 7:30 p.m. opening face-off at the Toyota Center in Houston.
