Cleveland Barons News Release

CLEVELAND, OH - Steve Bernier scored the game-winning goal in shootouts as the Barons overcame a 33-save performance from Rochester's Michael Leighton in a 3-2 win.

The Barons tied a franchise record by holding the Amerks to just 1-shot on goal through the opening twenty minutes of play. Neither team was able to score a goal as Rochester's goalie, Michael Leighton, stopped Barons forward Josh Hennessy on a breakaway for the best scoring chance of the period. Nolan Schaefer made his sixth consecutive start for the Barons and was lightly tested in the shutout period.

The teams exchanged goals in the second period skating to a 1-1 tie after forty minutes of play. Barons rookie forward Hennessy got the scoring started with his sixth goal of the season at the 4:18 mark with an assist from Garrett Stafford. The goal from Hennessy came while the two teams skated four-on-four. Rochester answered the Barons goal with a power play tally from Drew Larman, his fifth of the year, from Jeff Jillson and Mark Mancari. Rochester out-shot the Barons 8-7 during the period.

The exchange of goals in the third period forced an overtime session as the game was tied at 2-2 after regulation time. In the third period Ryane Clowe re-established the Barons one-goal lead with his fifth score of the season 52-seconds into the third period. Tim Conboy assisted on the Clowe goal for his second point in as many games. Rochester responded at the 12:31 mark on a goal from Doug Janik that tied the game at 2-2.

In the extra session the Barons failed to score on another power play chance, their ninth of the night, and a shootout exhibition was necessary to decide the winner. The Barons received goals from Mike Iggulden and Steve Bernier to beat Rochester, who got just one goal from Jiri Novotny. The Barons are now 2-1 in shootouts this season.

This afternoon completed a four-game home stand for the Barons as they travel to Milwaukee for a match up with the Admirals tomorrow evening. The game will be broadcast live at 4:50 EST via the B2 Networks on the Barons official web site, www.clevelandbarons.net. The Barons then return home for Wednesday night when they face the Chicago Wolves and Thursday against the Hamilton Bulldogs - both games will start at 7pm EST.
