Ward's return spoiled in 3-0 shutout
December 17, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Albany Devils News Release
Lowell, Mass. - Adam Hauser out dueled Cam Ward in net, putting up a 20-save shutout for the Manchester Monarchs (18-6-1-3), in a 3-0 win over the Lowell Lock Monsters (12-14-1-3) at Tsongas Arena on Saturday.
In a first period that saw only 14 total shots on goal, the visiting Monarchs took the advantage. Noah Clarke scored on just the second shot of the game, when his effort took a strange bounce off G Cam Ward and in. Brad Smyth made it 2-0 when he converted on a 2-on-1 with Connor James. The two clubs tied with seven shots apiece in the frame.
Defense continued to reign in the second. Lowell managed just six shots in the period, and could get nothing past G Adam Hauser, despite a pair of power play opportunities. Meanwhile, the Monsters penalty killing continued to excel against the Monarchs, thwarting three advantages in the middle period. In five games, the Monsters have held Manchester to just two goals on 28 opportunities (7.1%). But the score remained 2-0 in favor of the visitors through 40 minutes.
By the third period, Ward had shaken off the rust of a 14-day layoff. He kept the Lock Monsters in the game with strong saves, including a pad stop on a 2-on-1 chance by Greg Hogeboom. But it wasn't enough to topple the Monarchs tonight. Manchester's final tally found the back of the net while Ward was on the bench for an extra attacker and just 64 seconds left to play, and the Lock Monsters suffered their fourth shutout loss of the season. Hauser stopped all 20 shots the Monsters threw at him for his second shutout of the season.
