Not Extra Fun...The Aeros and SeaWolves played 10 innings last night, but the home team could not come out with a victory as Erie catcher Dusty Ryan pounded a solo shot in the first extra frame to lift the 'Wolves over Akron 4-3. The Aeros fell to 66-45 - now just 2.5 games ahead of Bowie for the Southern Division lead - and dropped to 3-5 in extra-inning contests. Erie put up a run in the first inning as Casper Wells reached on a throwing error by 3B Wes Hodges and Ryan Roberson eventually drove him in on a single through the left side. The Aeros tied it in the second when C Wyatt Toregas extended his hitting streak to seven with a single and went to third on SS Brandon Pinckney's double. With two outs, CF Jose Constanza then dropped down a perfect bunt as Toregas alertly bolted for the plate. The throw to first was not in time to get Constanza, allowing Toregas to score. LF Bronson Sardinha pounded his fifth home run of the year in the third inning to give Akron a 2-1 lead. That score held until the eighth when a sacrifice fly by Roberson and an RBI single by Santo de Leon put Erie ahead, 3-2. Hodges responded with a home run in the bottom half to tie it at 3-3 until Ryan's blast.
Lewis Dominant...Aeros starter Scott Lewis was splendid in six innings of work last night. The left-hander allowed one run (none earned) on five singles with a walk and a season-high eight strikeouts. The SeaWolves had a runner on base in every inning except the second, but the Tribe's 2004 3rd-round pick used strikeouts to escape every jam in his outing. After allowing the RBI single to Roberson in the first, Lewis struck out Ryan to end the inning. The former Ohio State standout then punched out de Leon with a runner at second and two outs in the fourth, and in the fifth and sixth, Lewis avoided trouble by ending each frame with a strikeout with a man on. Lewis has now gone six straight outings without allowing more than two earned runs, and he has worked at least six innings in his last five.
Lefty against Lefty...The Aeros have four left-handed hitting outfielders in Bronson Sardinha, Stephen Head, Nathan Panther, and Jose Constanza, and three of the four hit left-handed pitching better than they hit right-handers. Sardinha hits .297 (22-74) against southpaws (.283 against right-handers) and two of his five home runs have come against left-handers. Head, who is hitting .304 overall, is batting .315 (28-89) against lefties and .299 against right-handers. Panther has the largest discrepancy toward left-handed pitching, batting .298 (14-47) against southpaws while hitting just .256 against righties. Constanza is the only left-hander who sees the ball better from a right-hander; the speedy outfielder hits just .231 (18-78) against southpaws, but .314 against right-handers.
Did You Know...The Aeros are 52-0 when leading after eight innings.
