
Admirals Shoot Past Checkers 4-3

NORFOLK, Va. - Marc-Antoine Pouliot scored twice in regulation and Blair Jones netted the game-clinching tally in the shootout as the Norfolk Admirals (28-17-8-4) topped the Charlotte Checkers (33-20-2-6), 4-3, on Friday night at Norfolk Scope Arena. The Admirals will play a quick two-game road trip beginning tomorrow night in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton before heading back to Scope on Wednesday to face the Hershey Bears.
Paul Szczechura also scored in regulation and Pouliot added a shootout conversion, as well. All three Norfolk goals in regulation were scored on the power play - including two five-on-three power play goals. The Admirals out-shot the Checkers 54-27.
Goaltender Dustin Tokarski stopped 24 of 27 shots for the Admirals through 65 minutes and stopped four of five shooters in the shootout.
After a scoreless opening two periods, Norfolk struck three times in span of 55 seconds to begin the third period. Szczechura netted his thirteenth goal of the season on a five-on-three power play 1:50 into the frame. Pouliot also scored on a five-on-three power play at 2:33. Pouliot then netted his seventeenth goal of the season on a five-on-four power play at 2:45 to make it 3-0 Admirals.
The Checkers clawed back with a pair of quick goals just over five minutes later. Bryan Rodney scored at 7:48. Nicolas Blanchard drew the Checkers to within a goal of Norfolk at 8:18.
Drayson Bowman tied the game at 3-3 with only 2:22 remaining in regulation.
Charlotte scored first in the shootout with a Zac Dalpe tally in the first round. Pouliot tied the shootout at 1-1 in the second round. After Jones scored in the top of the fifth round to put the Admirals up 2-1, Tokarski stopped Jon Matsumoto in the bottom of the fifth round to seal the victory for Norfolk.
Dustin Tokarski (27 shots, 24 saves) earned the win. Justin Pogge (53 shots, 50 saves) was saddled with the shootout setback.
Norfolk was 3-8 on the power play. Charlotte was 1-6.
