Norfolk Admirals News Release

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Admirals had a lackluster start to their three-in-three weekend, surrendering three unanswered goals to the Worcester Sharks Friday night at the DCU Center in a 5-2 loss.

Much like with Charlotte, the hosts got the scoring going early. With Charlie Sarault in the box for elbowing, Konrad Abeltshauser controlled the puck at center and ushered a pass to the left circle. Dylan DeMelo drove one on net, which beat goaltender Jason LaBarbera under the right pad. Travis Oleksuk earned the secondary assist at 5:22 to give the Sharks the 1-0 lead.

With just 49 seconds remaining in the opening frame, the Sharks struck again. Abeltshauser fired a shot on goal that LaBarbera knocked down. Unfortunately for the Admirals, Trevor Parkes collected the rebound, turned from backhand to forehand and buried it. Worcester headed into the intermission up, 2-0.

The Admirals would not be shutout. Center Antoine Laganiere handled the puck at the goal line and threw it toward the crease. The shot banked off Worcester goaltender Aaron Dell's leg and bounced into the net, cutting the Sharks' lead in half. Andrew O'Brien and Louis Leblanc garnered the assists at 4:53.

What momentum Norfolk gained didn't last long. Once more while a man-up, Willie Coetzee converted with under five minutes left in the second period off a tape-to-tape pass by Evan Trupp. Positioned in the left ring, Coetzee one-timed the dish and re-established the two-goal advantage for a 3-1 score.

Trupp added a goal of his own two minutes later, giving Worcester a 4-1 lead through 40 minutes of play. Micheal Haley earned another tally early in the third, adding to his team-leading seven power-play goals. Matt Bailey capitalized on a Norfolk power play with two minutes to go in the game on a tip-in, but it was too little, too late and the Admirals fell, 5-2.

Dell stopped 32 of 34 Admirals shots, while LaBarbera fought off 24 of the 28 shots he faced and Ryan Faragher turned aside six of seven in relief. Worcester went 3-for-7 on the power play, and Norfolk succeeded on one of its five man-advantages.

The Admirals take on the Sharks again tomorrow night at 7 p.m., before heading up to Bridgeport to tackle the Sound Tigers on Sunday.

Three Stars:

1) WOR #13 Evan Trupp (1 G, 1 A)

2) WOR #10 Konrad Abeltshauser (2 A)

3) WOR #29 Aaron Dell (32 saves)

NOTES ... Andrew O'Brien recorded his first two-point night of the season ... All but five skaters recorded at least one shot on goal ... It was the first time the Admirals have given up three power-play goals this year.
