Hamilton Bulldogs News Release

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Hamilton Bulldogs forward Drayson Bowman and defenceman Morgan Ellis scored, but their offence wasn't enough to get the 'Dogs (26-19-7-0) past the Grand Rapids Griffins (29-17-5-1) in a 3-2 overtime loss on Friday night at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The 'Dogs got on the board first at 5:47 of the first period when Bowman got his stick on a point shot by defenceman Davis Drewiske for his ninth goal of the season on the power play. Forward Nick Sorkin drew a second assist.

The Griffins appeared to have tied the game with 9:35 to play in the first period when forward Marek Tvrdon beat Bulldogs goaltender Joey MacDonald, but not the crossbar. The call on the ice was goal, but was overturned by video review.

After a scoreless second period, Tvrdon got redemption at 4:08 of the third period. First, Grand Rapids forward Andy Miele streaked toward the Hamilton goal and ripped a wrist shot off the post. Then, Tvrdon stole the puck from behind the net, skated out in front and beat MacDonald with a wrist shot short side to make it a 1-1 game.

Miele got on the board himself at 11:38 of the third period when he tipped a point shot by defenceman Ryan Sproul past MacDonald to give the Griffins a 2-1 lead. Forward Mark Zengerle had a second assist.

With less than three minutes to play in regulation, Ellis beat Griffins goaltender Petr Mrazek with a slap shot from the top of the right circle for his first goal of the season to tie the game 2-2 and force overtime. Drewiske and forward Gabriel Dumont had assists. With the assist, Dumont notched a point in his seventh straight game, a season-high streak for the Bulldogs.

At 4:45 of OT, with the teams playing 3-on-3, Grand Rapids forward Andreas Athanasiou scored on a breakaway to win it, 3-2. Defenceman Nathan Paetsch and Mrazek had assists.

MacDonald made 31 saves on 34 shots for the Bulldogs in the loss, while Mrazek stopped 33 of 35 shots faced for the Griffins in the win.

Hamilton went 1-for-3 on the power play, while Grand Rapids was 0-for-2 with a man advantage.
