Crunch Cash in at Home with 3-1 over Devils

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Crunch captured their 30th victory of the season Friday at the War Memorial, downing the Albany Devils, 3-1. The Crunch (30-13-8-0) improved to 5-0 against the Devils (22-21-4-5) and snapped their five-game winless skid.

Jonathan Marchessault, Syracuse's leading scorer who missed last six games dues to injury, returned to the lineup and provided the eventual game-winning goal at 1:42 of the second period, his 13th marker of the season and 39th point. Vladislav Namestnikov and Joel Vermin assisted on the marker, the first of two points for Namestnikov.

Playing his 29th game with Syracuse this season, Namestnikov registered his sixth multi-point performance when he added an insurance goal at 8:35 of the third period, his 10th goal and 25th point. David Broll garnered the primary assist, his first point with the Crunch in his third game, with a stretch pass to set up Namestnikov's breakaway and five-hole backhand tuck. J.P. Cote garnered his second assist in as many games for seven on the season.

Yanni Gourde opened the scoring for Syracuse with his team-leading 17th goal at 13:03 of the first period when he redirected a right-point shot from Matt Corrente. Gourde has 35 points, second most on the team, while Corrente has six (1g, 4a). Carter Ashton had the second assist, his second in as many games.

Kelly Zajac provided Albany's only marker with a power-play goal at 9:16 of the second to pull the Devils within a 2-1 deficit. Zajac, collecting his first goal in his 19th game of the year, found a rebound of a Paul Thompson shot from the right circle on the rush. Brandon Burlon had the second assist.

Crunch netminder Kristers Gudlevskis made 20 saves and improved to 16-8-2 while Albany's Scott Wedgewood recorded 21 saves on 24 Crunch shots in defeat.

Charlie Dodero was a game-high plus-3. Joey Mormina played his 600th AHL game. The Crunch were 0-for-3 on the power play.

Syracuse hosts Binghamton at the War Memorial Arena Saturday at 7 p.m. The Senators defeated Hershey, 5-3, Friday allowing Syracuse to jump the Bears for second place in the Eastern Conference. Manchester's point in an overtime loss to St. John's leaves the Monarchs one point ahead of Syracuse for the conference lead.
