Spooner's Second Period Pair Launches P-Bruins over Phantoms

Providence Bruins News Release

ALLENTOWN, P.A. - Ryan Spooner scored two of the Providence Bruins' four second-period goals as the team topped the Lehigh Valley Phantoms 5-1 Friday night at the PPL Center.

The P-Bruins and Phantoms combined for only seven shots in the first 11 minutes (four for the home team and three for the visitors). Providence then had its first man advantage of the game and more than doubled its shot total. Despite a low volume of shots in frame, both teams hit a post and the crossbar, but came up empty-handed.

In the middle stanza, Ryan Spooner scored just 0:08 in, after Colin Stuart won the opening faceoff back to Steve Eminger, and the defenseman launched it into the offensive end. Spooner wove through the top of the slot and beat Phantoms goaltender Anthony Stolarz high glove-side.

Tyler Randell's 2-on-1 into the offensive end led to a Phantoms penalty. While on the power play, Zach Trotman blasted a shot onto Stolarz. Colin Stuart found the rebound at the top of the crease, was denied on his first attempt, then buried his own rebound to double the Bruins' lead at 11:36.

Andrew Cherniwchan added some insurance with a breakaway goal at 16:03, making it 3-0 Providence. Spooner added his second goal of the game, coming on the man advantage, exactly one minute after Cherniwchan's lamp-lighter.

After the fourth goal of the period, Stolarz was chased from the game. Martin Ouellette came in to relieve him for the final 2:57 of the period and the remainder of the game.

Stuart scored his second goal of the game on a 2-on-1 in the third. Seth Griffith raced through the slot, held the puck on the right side of it, and fed Stuart for a one-timer at 5:42.

Petr Straka spoiled Jeremy Smith's chance at a shutout with a goal at 15:51, turning a Providence pass into the home team's first goal of the season series. (The Bruins and Phantoms play their only other game against each other at the Dunkin Donuts Center on Friday, March 13.)

The Bruins will continue their road trip with a Saturday evening contest against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at 7:05.
