Admirals Hold Off Pirates' Rally
March 24, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Norfolk Admirals News Release
Carl Corazzini scored a goal and chipped in an assist, and Adam Munro made 41 saves, as the Admirals downed Portland 3-2 on Friday night.
Norfolk netted the first goal of the game just 1:53 into the first period. Corazzini sent a tough-angle shot on net that bounced to Eric Meloche at the goalmouth. Meloche struck pay dirt with his second rebound shot, as he beat Jani Hurme top shelf. The Admirals played the rest of the period mainly in the defensive zone, as they killed several penalties and Munro made 18 saves. Norfolk led 1-0 after the opening period.
A turnover at the Portland blue line allowed the Admirals to double their lead. Matt Keith pick-pocketed a Pirates' defender to start a two-on-one break with Martin St. Pierre. Keith faked a pass to St. Pierre, curled the puck around a defender, and sent a sharp wrister past Hurme at 8:23. Norfolk took a 2-0 lead into the final frame.
Corazzini made the Admirals' advantage 3-0 with a breakaway goal early in the third. With a defender' draped over his stick, the Norfolk winger curled the puck on his backhand from right to left in front of Hurme and beat the goaltender with a forehand shot along the ice at 2:33. Portland pulled to within a goal of Norfolk in the middle of the third. Pierre Parenteau's shot glanced of Munro's shoulder and trickled past the goal line at 10:39. Zenon Konopka's blue line blast on the power play dented the twine at 12:35. However, those would be the only blemishes on Munro's record, as his 41 saves made Norfolk's three goals stand up for the victory.
Adam Munro allowed only two goals on 43 shots to earn the victory. Jani Hurme made 30 saves on 33 shots and picked up the loss.
Norfolk was 0-9 on the power play while Portland was 1-7.
