Lowell, Mass. - Jeff Campbell scored once in regulation and added the shootout winner for the Lowell Lock Monsters (27-32-5-7), as they defeated the Providence Bruins (35-27-1-4) at Tsongas Arena on Friday night. Lowell climbs within nine points of Providence in the Atlantic Division with nine games to play.

Rookies were the story early tonight as the first period saw two players score their first goals in the AHL. Providence opened the scoring with Marco Caprara's tally at 5:52 to make it 1-0. About 10 minutes later the Monsters evened the score. Jeff Campbell got a little help with a redirection in front to get his first of the season. Keith Aucoin tied the single season record for assists (51) and points (77) on the play, and it was 1-1 after the first stanza.

Lowell continued with the first-goal trend in the second period when Blue Bennefield intercepted a clearing pass in the slot and snuck home a lamplighter at 2:47. It was his first AHL goal in just his fourth game with the Monsters. The lead was short-lived, however. David Lundbohm netted his 16th of the season just 29 seconds later, angling a pass just inside the left post on G Tyler Weiman.

Tied 2-2 heading into the third period, neither Providence G Derek Gustafson, nor Weiman, would surrender the go-ahead goal. Weiman kicked out 13 Bruins shots in the period while Lowell's offense was suppressed, managing just four shots on goal. Providence also outshot the Monsters 2-1 in overtime, and the game headed to a shootout. Weiman was perfect, stopping all seven Bruins opportunities, while Jeff Campbell, on his second shootout attempt on the night, finished the contest with a wrister that jolted past Gustafson to earn the extra point. Weiman has been beaten in the shootout just twice on 15 shots this season (86.7%).

Monsters Memos: After the game the Carolina Hurricanes recalled Aucoin. The Canes host Washington on Saturday night... Lowell signed Merrimack College senior D Rob LaLonde to an amateur try-out contract. He made his debut tonight and finished ‘even' with one minor penalty.
