B2 Networks AHL Game of the Week
Published on March 24, 2006 under American Hockey League (AHL) News Release
Las Vegas, NV - The B2 Networks coverage of the AHL focuses on the Calder Cup Playoff races as 28 games will be broadcast this weekend. The AHL Game of the Week is a showdown in two parts as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins try to hold on to their grasp of the East Division lead against the hard surging Hershey Bears. Only two points separate the teams heading into the weekend. Two games to determine first place will be played, Friday at 7:05pm at Wilkes-Barre, then Sunday at 5:00pm at Hershey.
When the season first started, it didn't appear any team would challenge the Penguins for the division title as Wilkes-Barre jumped out to an amazing record of 20-0-2-1. Call-ups and injuries then took their toll on the Penguins. At one point the team had its five top scorers, starting goalie, and head coach, Michel Therrien, moving up to the big club in Pittsburgh. With all the attention across the state, the Hershey Bears have very quietly played a solid brand of hockey this season. With last Sunday's shootout win the boys from Chocolatetown clinched a spot in the Calder Cup Playoffs and look to grab the division lead for the first time this season.
Since joining the team at the NHL trading deadline, former Penguin Kris Beech has been a force for the Bears with two goals in three games. In 51 AHL games played, Beech is averaging more than one point a game (20-33-53). Since the recall of Marc-Andre Fleury, the Penguins net has been guarded by the all-star play of Dany Sabourin. Stepping into the starter's role, Sabourin has amassed and impressive record of 25-11-4 with a GAA of 2.40 and a save percentage of .923. This weekend marks the last regular season meetings between the two teams, with Wilkes-Barre leading the season series with a 5-1-1-1 mark through the first eight games played. Fans wanting to watch either game will be able to access the broadcast through the individual team websites, or the league site www.theahl.com. The cost to watch each game is the usual price of $6 dollars. A high speed internet connection and a current version of Windows Media Player are required to view the events.
