Admirals Get By Barons
January 17, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Milwaukee Admirals News Release
Milwaukee, WI-In spite of pulling a disappearing act for much of the third period, the Milwaukee Admirals had enough magic left in their hats to come away with a 4-3 overtime win over the Cleveland Barons Tuesday night at the Bradley Center.
Staked to a comfortable 3-1 lead and playing against a team that was down to only four defensemen, it looked like the Admirals would cruise to their seventh straight home win. But the scrappy Barons turned up the heat in the third period and Milwaukee didn't respond. By the time Cleveland's Ray DiLuaro poked the puck past Admirals goaltender Pekka Rinne with 1:18 left in the game the Ads found themselves tied at three and headed for OT.
Darren Haydar brought the Admirals out of their late-game slumber and won it for the team when his shot at the 44 second mark of the overtime caromed off of the Barons Tim Conboy and into net. Corey Hessler made a nice play to hold the zone and then dished to Scottie Upshall who got the puck to Haydar for the score.
Haydar's goal was his second of the game and his team-leading 19th marker of the season.
Milwaukee fell behind 1-0 just 39 seconds into the game when Steve Bernier scored for the Barons. The Admirals seemed to get energized by a major scrum that took place at the 11:28 mark of the first, which resulted in four players receiving game misconduct penalties, including two Cleveland defensemen leaving them with just four Blueliners to play the rest of the game. The Ads responded with goals by Libor Pivko and Upshall to go ahead 2-1 after 20 minutes of play.
Haydar scored his first goal of the game with just under two minutes to go in the second period on assists from Pivko and Kevin Klein to give the Ads the 3-1 lead.
Upshall continued his impressive play for Milwaukee, picking up a goal and an assist and giving him ten points (5g-5a) in just four games since being reassigned by the Predators last week. Rinne continues to shine on Bradley Center Ice for the Ads as he picked up his 14th home win of the year and 17th victory overall.
The Ads continue a stretch of five games in seven nights this Thursday when the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights make a visit to the Bradley Center. Puck drop is slated for 7:00 pm. For tickets, fans can call (414) 276-4545 or log on to www.ticketmaster.com.
