Admirals Earn Point in Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Kyle Palmieri scored twice on the power play and Frederik Andersen made 37 saves as the Norfolk Admirals (14-17-2-1) earned one point in the standings with a 3-2 shootout loss to the Syracuse Crunch (24-7-2-3) on Friday night from the Onondaga County War Memorial at Oncenter.

Andersen (7-9-1) stopped 22 shots in the third period alone as Syracuse was able to claw back from a 2-0 deficit. The Admirals won the special teams battle, scoring two power play goals on four chances while denying all six Crunch power play opportunities. Syracuse claimed the extra standings point by winning the shootout, 4-2.

Norfolk's road trip concludes tomorrow night against the Binghamton Senators before the team returns to Norfolk Scope Arena for three home games next week. The homestand begins on Tuesday night against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

After a scoreless first period, the Admirals jumped ahead of the Crunch with a pair of Palmieri power play goals in the second period. Peter Holland won a faceoff in the right circle back to Palmieri at the right point. Palmieri skated a few strides towards the high slot before sending a slap shot through a screen and past Syracuse goaltender Dustin Tokarski at 2:32.

Norfolk's lead doubled to just over five minutes later. Palmieri entered the attacking zone with speed in the slot. He sent a wrist shot from between the hashmarks past Tokarski at 7:34 for his 13th goal of the season.

Syracuse cut the Admirals' lead to 2-1 late in the second period. Cory Conacher cut through the right wing and dropped a pass to Danick Gauthier, who scored at 15:57.

The Crunch dominated the third period, out-shooting the Admirals, 23-4, in the frame. Andersen was exceptional in net, but surrendered the game-tying goal to Pierre-Cedric Labrie at 13:16 of the final frame.

After a scoreless overtime, the game proceeded to the shootout. Syracuse scored on all four of their shootout attempts while Holland and Emerson Etem were the only players to score on Norfolk's four shootout attempts.

Tokarski (17-5-3) stopped 18 of 20 shots through regulation and overtime before stopping two of four shooters in the shootout for the win.
