Rivermen Pull Away from Milwaukee

January 11, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Peoria Rivermen News Release

Sergey Andronov's third-period penalty shot goal stood up as the game-winner as the Peoria Rivermen scored three times in the third to pull away from Milwaukee, 5-2, on Friday night at Carver Arena. Five different goal scorers found the back of the net as the Rivermen peppered goaltender Jeremy Smith with 39 shots on goal.

The Rivermen attack started early as they outshot the Admirals 18-5 in the first period. Peoria jumped on the scoreboard first as Andrew Murray stole the puck in the defensive zone, rushed up the left side, and scored on a wrist shot past Smith. Murray's unassisted goal was his sixth of the season.

The second period was marred by multiple penalties, but Murray helped the Rivermen double their lead after drawing a tripping penalty with 7.3 seconds remaining in the frame. Adam Cracknell scored his eighth goal of the year after he deflected in Mark Cundari's shot from the blueline.

Milwaukee scored quickly in the third period after Taylor Beck's shot missed the net and bounced high in the air off the back boards. Austin Watson scored his team-leading 13th goal of the year as he smashed the puck in with his stick just below the crossbar. The play marked Beck's team-leading 20th assist.

In a one-goal game with 7:48 remaining, Andronov had a breakaway and was tripped before he was able to shoot the puck. He was able to beat Smith on the penalty shot with a pump-fake move to the forehand to give the Rivermen a 3-1 lead.

The Rivermen added the next two goals to build a 5-2 lead. First, Evegeny Grachev found the back of the net for his fifth goal of the year after a great setup by Tyler Shattock. Just 61 seconds later, Cody Beach added his first goal as a Rivermen, assisted by Brent Regner and Taylor Chorney.

Milwaukee's Scott Valentine scored the final goal of the game at 18:44. Peoria went 1-for-5 on the power play and had a 39-24 advantage in shots on goal. The Admirals went 0-for-5 on the man advantage.

The Rivermen continue their three-game weekend on the road against the Grand Rapids Griffins on Saturday at 6 p.m. All games can be heard on CD Country 107.9 FM or online through www.rivermen.net .
