NORFOLK, Va. - This evening, the Norfolk Admirals became the first team to clinch a berth in the 2012 Calder Cup Playoffs.
The Admirals clinched the playoff berth tonight by virtue of their 7-2 victory over the Charlotte Checkers combined with a 5-1 loss by the Portland Pirates to the Springfield Falcons. Norfolk is now guaranteed to finish among the top eight teams in the Eastern Conference during the 2011-12 regular season.
Norfolk (44-18-1-2, 91 points in 65 games) has the best record in the American Hockey League and Eastern Conference by eight points over the St. John's IceCaps (38-16-52, 83 points in 61 games). The Admirals also lead the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (36-20-2-5, 79 points in 63 games) by 12 points for the lead in the East Division.
Eight teams in each conference shall qualify for the 2012 Calder Cup Playoffs. Following the conclusion of each team's 76-game regular season, the three division winners in each conference will be seeded first through third (in order of regular-season points) and the next five best teams (in order of regular-season points) will be seeded fourth through eighth.
