LONG BEACH, Calif. – Mike Scott scored twice and Lance Mayes continued his mastery of the Ice Dogs with 27 saves in a 4-2 victory Wednesday at Long Beach Arena.

Alaska outshot Long Beach 10-8 in a scoreless first period where both teams had excellent chances; Jerome Marois and Eric LaPlante each ringed shots off the goalpost against Mayes, who had shutout the Ice Dogs 4-0 November 7. The Aces dominated Long Beach on special teams in the second period, scoring twice on the power play and once shorthanded. Scott opened the scoring at 4:54, and with the Ice Dogs trying to tie the contest on a power play of their own, Kimbi Daniels flipped a backhander past Long Beach goalie Colin Zulianello for a 2-0 edge at 11:33. With 1:16 remaining in the period, Ryan Bast registered his first goal of the year, beating a screened Zulianello from the top of the right circle. Mark Smith assisted on the first and third goals for Alaska, and finished with a playmaker on the night.

Midway through the third period, the Ice Dogs finally ended a run of 109:03 of scoreless hockey against Mayes, as Mike Ouellet cut the gap to 3-1. Three minutes later, Krzysztof Wieckowski banged home a loose puck in front and suddenly the lead had shrunk to 3-2. But the Aces (10-7-1) held on, as Mayes denied Jerome Marois at point blank range in the game's final minute, allowing Scott to seal the victory with an empty-netter at 19:17.

Alaska will spend its Thanksgiving in Las Vegas, then tangle with the second-place Wranglers (9-5-4) Friday at 6:00 p.m. AST. Second place will be on the line as Idaho has taken over the top spot in the Pacific Division with a 6-2 rout of Fresno Wednesday. All Alaska Aces games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
