Aces earn point in 3-2 shootout loss

Alaska Aces News Release

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Charles Linglet punched home a rebound with 6.4 seconds left in regulation as the Alaska Aces earned a point in the Pacific Division standings with a 3-2 shootout loss to the Gulls in front of 2,225 Tuesday night at the San Diego Sports Arena.

Alaska had several chances early in the first period but had to wait until the 10:18 mark before grabbing a 1-0 lead, earned on a two-man advantage when Mike Scott snapped home a Mark Smith rebound for his team-leading ninth goal of the year. San Diego answered with a power play goal of its own, as Kevin Grant blasted a one-timer past Aces goaltender Dan Murphy with 2:36 remaining in the period. The goal ended more than 77 minutes of futility for the Gulls against Murphy, who had shut them out 3-0 November 12.

After a combined 25 shots on goal in the opening frame, action in the second period grinded to a halt, with the teams managing just nine shots. But the last of those chances gave San Diego a 2-1 lead, when Grant found the range with another howitzer from the point with 2:24 left in the period and the Gulls on a two-man advantage.

San Diego protected its lead until the waning moments, when Sylvain Deschatalets was called for a penalty at 17:51. Late in the ensuing power play, Alaska managed to put the puck on net, where Nolan Graham and Linglet hammered away until the ECHL's top-scoring rookie beat Trevor Koenig top shelf. Neither team scored in overtime or in the first four rounds of the shootout, when San Diego's David Neale finally slipped one past Murphy, who finished with 30 saves, after Koenig had stuffed Scott in Alaska's half of the fifth and final round.

The Aces continue their five-games-in-six-nights-in five-cities tomorrow at Long Beach Arena against the Ice Dogs (6-8-1) at 6:00 p.m. AST. Alaska sits at 9-7-1, three points behind Las Vegas and Idaho for the Pacific Division lead. Lance Mayes will start tomorrow night in Long Beach after shutting out the Ice Dogs 4-0 with 33 saves in his first professional start November 7. All Alaska Aces games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
