San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO – The Alaska Aces dominated the San Diego Gulls two weeks ago. San Diego got some payback Tuesday night with a 3-2 shootout win, before 2,225 at the Sports Arena.

The Gulls and Aces met for a two-game set in Anchorage, Alaska earlier this month. The Aces took both games by a combined score of 11-1. Needless to say head coach Steve Martinson wasn't happy and wanted retribution. Well... he got it.

Alaska took an early 1-0 advantage, but the Gulls scored two straight to take the lead, which they didn't relinquish until the waning moments of the third period. After a scoreless overtime session, David Neale scored the lone goal in the shootout to give San Diego the 3-2 victory.

San Diego (7-4-1) has now won a season-high three straight games and moves into a fourth place with the Fresno Falcons. Both are six points behind the Las Vegas Wranglers and Idaho Steelheads, who are tied for the Pacific Division lead. Alaska (9-7-1), now winless in four of its last five, remains third in the Pacific Division, three points out of first.

The Aces drew first blood midway through the first period on Mike Scott's ninth goal of the season. Igor Pohanka and Mike Garrow were both serving penalties and Alaska went to work on the two-man advantage. Mark Smith took the puck at the blue-line, crept into the slot and fired a wrist shot that Trevor Koenig stopped. Scott was standing right on the doorstep and easily tapped in the rebound.

San Diego tied it at 17:24 of the first on a power-play goal by Kevin Grant. Garrow, standing at the left point, whipped a pass to Mark Pederson, stationed in the right circle. Pederson gave a one-touch pass to Grant, who blasted a one-timer past a screened Dan Murphy.

Sylvain Deschatelets gave the Gulls a 2-1 lead with another power-play goal 17:36 into the second. Louis Mass was already serving a holding penalty when Murphy got called for delay-of-game. On the ensuing two-man advantage Deschatelets, standing between the hash marks, re-directed Grant's slap shot over Murphy's left shoulder.

Charles Linglet tied the game, 2-2, with just 6.4 seconds remaining in the third. After a wild scramble in front of Koenig, Linglet found the puck and lifted it over Koenig's right shoulder. It was Linglet's ninth goal of the year, tying him with Scott for the team lead.

Both teams had quality chances in overtime, but failed to light the lamp. Neale finally scored in the fifth round of the shootout, beating Murphy with a backhander. Koenig stopped all five Alaska shooters and has stoned 15 of 16 shootout attempts this season. The San Diego netminder stopped 23 shots in regulation and overtime, upping his record to 6-1-2. Murphy turned aside 30 shots but suffered the hard-luck loss.

Notes: The Gulls are unbeaten in five straight games (4-0-1)... Pederson now leads San Diego with 11 points. He has five points in the last two games... Steve Martinson needs eight more wins for 400 all-time... San Diego plays seven of its next eight games at home... Alaska has outscored the Gulls 13-4 in three games this season... The Blue and Orange are 58-16-4 all-time against the Aces... Billy Tibbetts (fractured wrist) and Sandro Sbrocca (sore groin) both remain on injured reserve. Cliff Loya returned to action after sitting the last three games with a sore shoulder...

San Diego hosts the Long Beach Ice Dogs Friday at 7:35 p.m. before playing in Las Vegas Saturday at 7 p.m. The Gulls then return to home ice Sunday when they take on the Bakersfield Condors at 5:05 p.m. Sunday will feature the first "Skate with the Gulls," held immediately following the game. All games can be heard live on KPOP 1360 AM with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. The Gulls Internet radio show, hosted by Tera Black and Jeremy Zager on wsradio.com, will begin airing biweekly soon. Stay tuned for more details.
