Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (20-20) fell to .500 on the season for the first time since April 13 as the Las Vegas 51s (20-20) took the third game of the series 9-4, with the Vegas offense scoring all nine of their runs with two outs. So far in the series the 51s have scored 20 runs, and 14 runs have been scored with two men gone in the inning.
Las Vegas outfielder Andrew Brown drove in four runs in the first three innings of the game on a two-run shot in the first inning and a two-run triple in the third inning, as the 51s put enough offense to take the game with five runs in those three innings. Brown's three-bagger was part of three triples by the Vegas offense in the game, all off of Storm Chasers starter Chris Dwyer, which is the most triples allowed in a game all season for Omaha. The 2-3-4 hitters for the 51s were a combined 6-for-12 in the game with seven runs scored.
The Chasers staff allowed ten or more hits in their fifth consecutive game, their longest streak of the year, and during that five game stretch the team ERA has risen from 3.75 to 4.09. Dwyer came in to the game having allowed four runs in his 20.1 innings at Werner Park this season, but he was touched up for seven runs (four earned) in his six innings of work. In his first 38.0 innings of the season Dwyer allowed only nine runs, but in his last two starts the left-hander has allowed 11 runs in 11.1 innings of work.
Third baseman Johnny Giavotella and leftfielder Xavier Nady attempted to keep the Storm Chasers in the game with each launching a homer, Giavotella's being his team-leading 19th extra-base hit on the season and the first homer of the month for Nady after he led Omaha with five April home runs. After the Nady blast in the sixth that cut the lead to 7-4, the Storm Chasers could only muster one baserunner in their final 13 at-bats.
With a double in the first inning, Chasers utility man Irving Falu moved in to sole possession of fourth place all-time on the Omaha hits list breaking a tie with Aaron Guiel (2000-2006) and giving Falu 539 hits in his Triple-A career. Next up on the Omaha all-time hits list is Luis de los Santos (1987-1990) who has 577 hits, and Falu needs 61 more hits to become only the second player in franchise history to reach 600 hits (Jed Hansen is the only player currently at 662 hits).
The loss drops Omaha to 4-7 in non-conference games this season, but with Memphis losing in Tacoma tonight the Chasers remain two games back in the American Conference North. Omaha will look for the series split in the finale as they send out left-hander Ryan Verdugo (2-2, 4.38 ERA), who will be making his sixth day game start already this season after making only four day game starts during the 2012 season. Verdugo will face off with 51s right-hander Chris Schwinden (2-4, 5.85 ERA) with first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m. CDT.
