Vegas Bombs Sink Storm Chasers in 7-3 Loss

OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (20-19) were handed their fourth loss in the last six games as the Las Vegas 51s (19-20) took the second game of the series at Werner Park 7-3. The 51s scored five of their seven runs on three homers, the fourth time this season the Chasers have allowed three or more long balls.
Omaha starter Will Smith allowed a season-high four runs in his six innings of work, after the left-hander had only allowed three runs total in his previous 24.0 innings before tonight's game. It was only Smith's second loss in his last 11 outings for the Storm Chasers dating back to his time in Omaha last season, and the outing snaps his streak of four straight quality starts. All four runs allowed by the Omaha starter to the 51s came with two outs, and eight of the twelve runs allowed by Smith this season have come in that situation.
Omaha jumped on the board first on a long bomb of their own, a solo shot by Adam Moore in the second inning, but Las Vegas quickly responded in the next half inning with a three-run shot by designated hitter Josh Satin for his team-leading sixth homer of the year. The Chasers tied the game in the fifth inning on solo round-tripper by leftfielder Willy Taveras and a two-out RBI single by second baseman Christian Colon after shortstop Irving Falu tripled. The three-bagger for Falu was his team-leading fourth on the year and 27th in his time with the O-Royals/Storm Chasers, moving him to within one of Rondin Johnson for second place all-time in Omaha history.
After the Colon single the Storm Chasers were held to only one hit and three total baserunners by the Vegas bullpen over the next four innings while the 51s offense scored in three of the final four frames, including two leadoff homers by catcher Landon Powell in the seventh and leftfielder Collin Cowgill in the ninth. Each one of the three pitchers for Omaha in the game allowed a home run.
During the loss Max Ramirez' team-high 11-game hitting streak was snapped as the designated hitter went 0-for-3 with a walk, and the Storm Chasers as a team snapped their streak of seven consecutive games with at least ten hits by totaling seven on the night. Omaha is currently 4-6 in non-conference games so far this season.
In the third game of the series, the Chasers send out left-hander Chris Dwyer (3-1, 2.70 ERA), who has allowed two runs or less in six of his seven starts for Omaha this season. Dwyer will match up with 51s righty Carlos Torres (1-3, 6.75 ERA) with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CDT. The game will feature the George Brett "Bobble-Arms" Giveaway as the Storm Chasers commemorate the 30th anniversary of the "Pine Tar Incident" at Yankee Stadium.
