Memphis Redbirds News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - Carlos Triunfel hit a two-out double in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Tacoma Rainiers a 4-3 victory over the Memphis Redbirds on Saturday night at Cheney Stadium in the third game of a four-game series.
Alex Liddi lead off the eighth inning with a base hit off Sam Freeman (3-1), stole second and third base, and scored the game-winning run on the Triunfel hit.
Memphis (22-18) threatened to tie the game in the top of the ninth with Justin Christian on second base, but Tacoma reliever Logan Bawcom struck out Travis Tartamella to end the game for his sixth save.
All three games in the series have been decided in last at-bat fashion.
Shortstop Ryan Jackson went hitless to snap his season-best 10-game hitting streak. Vance Albitz went 2-for-4 with a double.
Nick Additon tossed his third consecutive quality start for a no-decision, allowing three runs on four hits with a season-high nine strikeouts.
The Redbirds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, beginning with a two-out single from Jamie Romak. After a Christian walk, Vance Albitz crushed a two-run double to center.
Memphis added its final run in the fourth for a 3-0 advantage as Washington native Brock Peterson smoked a leadoff double to left to lead off the inning. Peterson would move to third on a wild pitch and score on a Christian sacrifice fly.
Additon retired 12 of the first 14 batters over four scoreless innings before running into trouble in the fifth. Tacoma plated three runs to tie the game at 3-3, highlighted by RBI singles from Abraham Almonte and Franklin Gutierrez.
Marc Rzepczynski worked around three walks for a scoreless inning in relief. Freeman gave up three hits for a run in the eighth.
The two teams conclude their four-game series at 3:30 pm CT on Sunday afternoon at Cheney Stadium. Redbirds starter Maikel Cleto (1-2, 7.66) will toe the rubber against Tacoma left-hander James Paxton (2-3, 3.93).
