3000 Runners Expected for Sea Dogs Mother's Day 5K

Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs in conjunction with the Maine Track Club and Paradigm Window Solutions, will be hosting the tenth annual Mother's Day 5K Road Race on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 9th, 2010 at 9:00am. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Maine Cancer Foundation for Breast Cancer Research. There will also be a Kid's Run beginning at 8:30am that is free of charge.
The Portland Sea Dogs Mother's Day 5K is the largest 5K road race in the State of Maine. It is also the second largest road race in the state, only the Beach to Beacon is larger. A field of 3,000 runners is expected for this year's race.
In the previous nine years of the event, the Sea Dogs have been able to donate over $71,000.00 to the Maine Cancer Foundation for Breast Cancer Research including a record $20,500.00 in 2009.
Slugger and his Mom lead the way on the flat 5K course which begins in front of the Portland Expo building, travels down Congress Street, turning down Stevens Avenue, and making a right onto Brighton Avenue back down Deering Avenue into Fitzpatrick Stadium. The race culminates with a unique finish inside Hadlock Field in front of the third base dugout. The course is USAT&F certified and is part of the USAT&F Sanctioned Grand Prix series.
The top overall male and female finishers will receive a trophy, a pair of 2010 Season Tickets for the remainder of the 2010 Sea Dogs season, and throw out the ceremonial first-pitch prior to a future Sea Dogs game. The top three male and female finishers in each age group will also be presented with awards. All participants of the race will receive a complimentary ticket to attend a future Sea Dogs game. The first 1,000 registrants receive t-shirts and Mother's will receive carnations at the finish line.
The race is open to the public. Walkers and wheelchair racers are welcome as well. Registration is $18.00. The kid's race is free. Limited spots are still available, if you would like to run in the tenth annual Sea Dogs' Mother's Day 5K you may register online at www.seadogs.com or the Maine Running Company located at 563 Forest Avenue in Portland on Friday, May 7th from Noon to 6:00 PM or Saturday, May 8th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Additionally, runners may register the day of the race at Hadlock Field from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM, if spots remain. Runners who have already registered may also pick-up their packets at the Maine Running Company during the same hours as above.
Road Closures
Park Avenue from Weymouth Street to Saint John Street will be closed to traffic from 8:50 AM to 9:15 AM on Sunday, May 9th.
Father's Day 5K
With the success of the Mother's Day 5K, the Sea Dogs added a Father's Day 5K in 2009 which will return for 2010 and is scheduled for Sunday, June 20th. Proceeds from the Father's Day 5K will benefit Prostate Cancer Research.
