Naylor Sharp, R-Phils Win Second-Straight with 2-1 Victory Wednesday

May 5, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Reading Fightin Phils News Release

After tossing six solid innings in his Double-A debut on April 12, Drew Naylor has struggled to win a game over three-straight starts - Wednesday, his winless streak would come to an end.

Naylor (2-3, 4.55) tossed seven impressive innings, Domonic Brown remained red-hot as he launched what proved to be a game-winning home run, and the Reading Phillies beat the Portland Sea Dogs by a score of 2-1 in front of 3,643 fans at Hadlock Field in Portland, ME on Wednesday evening.

A member of the Philadelphia 40-man roster, Naylor, 23, allowed six hits and just one run over seven masterful innings, en-route to his second win of the 2010 season. Naylor, a native of Australia, walked just one batter and fanned a season-high six. Signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as a non-drafted free agent on March 2, 2004, the 6'4" righty posted an 8-11 mark with a 4.22 ERA last season with Clearwater (A).

While Naylor was sharp, Brown continued to make headlines with his red-hot hitting on the road trip. Brown, 22, stepped to the plate in the top of the fifth inning with the game tied at 1-1. The Phillies' top prospect ripped a two-out blast over the center field fence off of Sea Dogs' starter Casey Kelly (0-2, 2.87), which put the R-Phils on top by a score of 2-1. The homer, Brown's fourth of the season, was his third on the road trip.

Kelly, 20, allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits over five innings, and was saddled with his second loss of the season. Ranked as the top pitching prospect in the Red sox organization by Baseball America, Kelly fanned a season-high four batters, in what was his longest outing of the 2010 season.

Portland (13-11) got on the board first, and did so in the bottom of the first frame, courtesy of a Luis Exposito RBI groundout. Exposito finished the game 2-4 with two doubles and had the lone RBI for Portland, who have now dropped two-straight games. With the loss, Portland fell below the .500 mark at home this season (5-6).

The win for the R-Phils (10-16) was the second-straight against Portland, and they will now look for the series sweep on Thursday afternoon, as they battle the Sea Dogs in the finale at 12:00 p.m.

Taking the hill for the R-Phils on Thursday will be RHP Vance Worley (1-2, 5.40). Worley, 22, will look to win for the first time since April 18, when he tossed 5.1 solid innings en-route to a 4-3 win over New Hampshire. The Sea Dogs will counter with RHP Stephen Fife (1-1, 2.66).

Join Brian Seltzer, who will have the call for the R-Phils pre-game show on ESPN Radio 1240 AM WIOV and readingphillies.com beginning at 11:30 a.m. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. in the finale of their rain-shortened three-game series.

Phillers... Michael Schwimer got the final four outs to earn his third save of the season... He allowed just one hit and fanned two batters over 1.2 innings... Michael Spidale went 2-3 with a double and a walk... Tyson Gillies went 0-5 snapping his four-game hitting streak... The R-Phils return home for a six-game homestand beginning on Friday.
