Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - Hector Gimenez powered the Altoona Curve to a 5-2 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels in front of 3,773 at The Diamond on Wednesday night. Gimenez belted two home runs in the ballgame, notched four hits overall and drove in three runs in the win.

With the game tied, 2-2, in the top of the seventh inning, Gimenez delivered what would ultimately become the game-winning run with a home run to left field off of Squirrels' reliever Jake Stevens. The switch-hitter belted the solo-shot, which relegated Stevens (0-1) to the loss, batting right-handed.

With the score 3-2, Gimenez iced the ballgame with a home run batting left-handed against reliever Tony Pena Jr. in the ninth inning. With Alex Presley aboard, Gimenez crunched a two-run drive to right field, stretching the Curve lead to 5-2. That score held for the Curve as left-hander Daniel Moskos entered and earned his sixth save of the season by extinguishing a rally for Richmond and recording the final two outs of the ballgame.

As they did in game two, the Curve got out quickly in the first inning, this time against Richmond right-hander Mike MacDonald. Chase d'Arnaud got the Curve started with a lead-off double just fair inside the third-base line. Gorkys Hernandez singled behind him to put runners on the corners with nobody out before Jordy Mercer delivered the first run of the ballgame with a sacrifice fly to center field. Hernandez moved to second on a ground-out and scored for a 2-0 lead when Jim Negrych delivered a two-out single to right field.

Right-hander Ross Ohlendorf, making a Major League rehab start for Altoona held the Flying Squirrels at bay without a hit for the first three innings. Ultimately, he worked 4 1/3 frames, conceding two hits but no runs. He did not factor in the decision, but looked sharp attempting to return from a bout with back spasms.

MacDonald settled in to work five innings, but suffered a hamstring cramp as he came out for the sixth inning and was removed from the ballgame. He allowed just the two runs in the first inning on six hits, walking none and striking out five. He also didn't factor in the decision.

The Flying Squirrels worked to tie the ballgame in the sixth inning with a pair of runs off Jared Hughes. Roger Kieschnick brought home the first run with an RBI double off the wall in left-center field that scored Thomas Neal. Clay Timpner followed with an RBI single to score Kieschnick to tie the game, 2-2. The single and RBI extended Timpner's hit-streak and RBI-streak, each now reaching seven games.

Hughes (5-1) recovered to earn the win in relief, earning his fifth over four innings. He allowed the two runs on six hits.

The final game of the four-game series with Altoona is scheduled for 10:35 am on Thursday morning at The Diamond. LHP Clayton Tanner (2-2, 2.16) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Derek Hankins (2-0, 1.62 for the Curve.
