Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels are pleased to announce that former NFL running back Joe Washington will make an appearance at The Diamond during the Flying Squirrels' game against the Altoona Curve at 7:05 PM. Washington, who spent four seasons (1981-84) with the Washington Redskins and helped them win Super Bowl XVII, will be on hand to throw out a first pitch, sign autographs and pose for photos with fans and conduct a meet-and-greet at The Diamond.
Washington was a two-time first-team All-American while a running back at the University of Oklahoma and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. He played for four teams in the NFL, beginning his career with the San Diego Chargers after they selected him with the fourth overall pick in the 1976 NFL draft. He was with the Chargers for two seasons (1976-77) before being traded to the Baltimore Colts, where he spent three seasons (1978-80). He was named to the Pro Bowl in 1979 after leading the league with 82 receptions for 750 yards. Following his four-year stint with the Redskins, he finished his playing-career with the Atlanta Falcons in 1985.
"We realize that many of our great fans our also rabid Redskins fans," said Flying Squirrels' Vice President & COO Todd "Parney" Parnell. "We're thrilled to be able to bring Joe out to the ballpark, and know that having one of the Redskins' greats on hand will only enhance what has been an electric atmosphere here early in the season."
Included in the group of 70 greatest players in Washington Redskins history, Washington will sign autographs and pose for photographs with fans throughout the game on the concourse at The Diamond, and will also hold a pregame meet-and-greet and media session. He finished his NFL career with 4,839 rushing yards, 3,413 receiving yards and scored 30 touchdowns.
Tickets are currently available for Washington's appearance at The Diamond and can be purchased by visiting the Flying Squirrels' ticket office at The Diamond, calling (804) 359-FUNN (3866) or logging on to SquirrelsBaseball.com.
