Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
BOWIE, MD - Caleb Joseph's solo-home run in the 18th inning ended the longest game in Richmond Flying Squirrels' franchise history, 3-2, in favor of the Bowie Baysox. The blast came off of Squirrels left-hander David Quinowski (1-1) after 5 hours and 27 minutes of baseball at Prince George's Stadium on Saturday night.
Right-hander Tim Bascom (2-1) earned the win for the Baysox, working the final 3 1/3 innings of relief for Bowie. The length of the game eclipsed both the number of innings (15), but also the time of game (4:41) that the Squirrels and Altoona Curve played to on April 22nd.
Johnny Monell put the Squirrels on top first, leading off the second inning against Bowie right-hander Eddie Gamboa. On the second pitch of the frame, Monell lifted a high-arching solo-home run to left-center field. His third home run of the season gave Richmond an early 1-0 advantage.
The Baysox drew even when Joe Mahoney and Caleb Joseph supplied back-to-back singles to start the fourth inning against Squirrels' left-hander Ryan Verdugo. Mahoney was credited with a stolen base on a botched pick-off from the Squirrels, and he scored to tie the game, 1-1, on a ground out from Ronnie Welty. Verdugo recovered to record two strikeouts to end the threat without further damage incurred.
Verdugo worked five innings and didn't factor in the decision. He allowed a lone run on six hits, walked three and struck out four. Gamboa lasted an additional inning, going six, but also not factoring in the decision. He allowed one run on just three hits, walked one and struck out six.
Richmond broke back in front in the eighth inning against Bowie right-hander Raul Rivero. Juan Perez started the inning and ripped an opposite-field double over the head of right fielder Ronnie Welty. Justin Christian bunted him to third, and Nick Noonan gave the Squirrels the lead back with a single just over the outstretched mitt of first baseman Joe Mahoney.
Squirrels' closer Jason Stoffel came on in relief and got out of a jam in the eighth inning to preserve the 2-1. However, he couldn't survive an inning-opening walk in the ninth, as the Baysox rallied to even the ballgame and force extra-innings. Stoffel walked Carlos Rojas to start the ninth and pinch-hitter Steve Lerud bunted him into scoring position. Xavier Avery bounced a soft ground ball up the first base line that hopped off the first-base bag for an infield-single. Rojas moved to third and scored to even the game on a ground out from Greg Miclat.
